The World is Round
But we want a map on a flat sheet of paper
Mercator
To flatten the World
we could stretch it…
and stretch it…..
and stretch it…..
But watch
AFRICA

What has happened?
The shapes of the countries are messed up
For instance
Britain
and India

Seem to be the same size
but India is actually 13 x the size of Britain
So let’s try another way of flattening the World
Take an Orange
Mark it like this
Cut along the lines
Cut one side open
Eat the fruit
Flatten out the peel
Here is an orange peel map of the World
Let’s try another way
Collapse the world
onto an icosahedron
Buckymap
Shout out the numbers of the Continents
Which number is South America? 1 2 3 4 6 5 7 South America
Which number is Australia? 1 2 3 4 6 5 7 South America Australia
Which number is Europe? 1 2 3 4 6 5 7 South America Australia Europe
Which number is North America? 1 2 3 4 6 5 7 South America Australia North America Europe
Which number is Asia? 1 2 3 4 6 5 7 South America Australia North America Europe Asia
Which number is Africa? 1 2 3 4 6 5 7 South America Australia North America Africa Europe Asia
Which number is Antarctica? 1 2 3 4 6 5 7 South America Australia Antarctica North America Africa Europe Asia
When you get home cut out your buckymap
and make a Buckyglobe

Label South America on your map
Label Australia on your map
Label Europe on your map
Label North America on your map
Label Asia on your map
Label Africa on your map
Label Antarctica on your map
Let’s take an icosahedron
