  • The Story of S.O.P.A.• The Stop Online Piracy Act (H.R. 3261, or SOPA) would have expanded law enforcements’ ability to fight internet piracy.• Millions of dollars were spent by corporations fighting for and against this controversial bill, including staging an internet blackout. Companies Shown: Reddit, EFF, Wired, Wikipedia, Google, WordPress, Imgur, Twitter, News Corp, ESPN, Marvel, Viacom, Universal Studios, MasterCard, Visa, L’Oreal, NBCUniversal, MPIA, American Online, Yahoo, Facebook, Zynga, eBay, Reporters Without Borders, Mozilla, 4chan, Mojang, FSF
  • What is Lobbying?❖ To conduct activities aimed at influencing public officials on legislation.❖ A way special interests groups can try to get their cause out by hiring professional advocates to argue for specific legislation.❖ Extremely costly- advocates are well paid, which means only the rich (e.g. corporations) can afford it.
  • How much do corporations spend on lobbying?Company Total (1998-2012) Year Total Year Total 1998 $1.44 Billion 2005 $2.42 Billion GE $268,015,860 1999 $1.44 Billion 2006 $2.62 Billion Verizon $168,984,841 2000 $1.56 Billion 2007 $2.85 BillionExxon Mobil $173,592,742 2001 $1.64 Billion 2008 $3.30 Billion 2002 $1.82 Billion 2009 $3.50 Billion Boeing $159,634,310 2003 $2.04 Billion 2010 $3.54 BillionUS Chamber 2004 $2.18 Billion 2011 $3.32 Billion $857,015,680of Commerce Left: Some prominent companies Google $29,580,000 and how much they spent on lobbying. • Issues with Corporate Lobbying✤ Often, groups with more money have the ability to exert more influence.✤ Interests groups would donate exorbitant sums to campaign funds in hopes of receiving ‘favors’ from the possible incumbent.✤ As most people aren’t rich enough to afford lobbying, do corporations (with more money and lobbying power) have more political power than they should?
  • What to do-Corporate lobbying can never be completelyeradicated- protected by 1st amendment.Steps can be taken to control it, though. Knowledge is power. Spread the word. Petition for legislation that limits corporate spending on lobbyists. Visit http://petition.org for petitions that can change corporate bureaucracy.
  • QUOTES“Real lobbying reform must end the practice of corporate lobbyistswriting our laws.” -Marty Meehan“Its a sorry statement about how broken Washington is that wecould not take advantage of this unique and sad moment inhistory and enact serious lobbying reform.
