  • Everything you do on the Internet, with the exception of raw connections to IP addresses, uses the DNS. It is very inconvenient to remember the email address “asullivan@[216.146.45.50]”, but it's not hard to remember “asullivan@dyn.com”. We can't have the Internet without this service.
  • Second, in the DNS it is trivial to pretend to be someone else – to use “spoofed addresses”. This means that attacks are successful partly because it's hard to track down who they attackers are.
  • Finally, DNS queries are very small, and they can result in big answers. This means that the attacks are successful partly because they cost only a little, and result in a lot of damage.
