Immersive Technology Strategies Feb 2013 e newsletter

  1. 1. Welcome to this Immersive Technology Strategies Newsletter. This month’s edition provides opportunities for winning cash in gamification challenges, gives details of a new serious gamesworkshop for beginners and focuses on upcoming events and activities – I very much hope you find it usefulContained in this newsletter :-  Gamification of a Conference or Event  FREE Registration for DMU Games Festival Feb 25-28  New Serious Games Workshop for Beginners  Archived Presentations, Images and videos  Serious Games and Immersive Technology Heroes 3 – David Burden  Investment Opportunities in Serious Games  Call for Papers Thaisim 2013  Upcoming ConferencesGamification Challenges in support of Conferences and EventsThe forthcoming Cultural Exchanges Games Festival at De Montfort University is the first UK conference that I have “Gamified” asa way of not only adding value to the festival, but also as a platform for social good. The gamification challenges are open toanyone whether they attend the festival or not. I have obtained generous sponsorship from Singapore based Gamemaki whoprovided the gamification platform and tools free of charge and I am currently devising challenges that I hope will not only bringvisitors to the festival but will also benefit local people and businesses in innovative ways. The Café TwoTen Games Festival ChallengeThe Café TwoTen challenge is an example of how a small local business might benefit from gamifying an event. As a fairly regularvisitor to the Café TwoTen in Leicester, I noticed that they had started to use social networks to offer customer discounts. Byadding a games challenge to the conference, I am able to not only help a local business but offer discounts and points for anyonehaving their picture taken at the café.I invite all my readers to view and participate in the challenges by logging in at :- http://gamesmaki,com/game/dmugame - (usersof Internet Explorer should ignore and shut down the error screen) or by downloading the smartphone app “Gamemaki” andregistering as a player for the “DMU Games Festival Challenges”. You can also use your Facebook account to sign in.The smartphone and iPad Gamemaki App screenI am using this tool to provide incentive for people to register for the festival, offer to do presentations, submit suggestions fornew challenges that can support worthwhile causes and have fun before, during and after the festival.Signing up as a player is FREE of charge and I will be offering a prize for the player with the most points.

As birth rates decline and life expectancy increases, andshrinking working population may be forced to support a rapidly growing ageing population. There are many technologies beingdeveloped support Independent Living and reduce the cost of care for the elderly but immersive technologies could offer a newapproach to these problems by harnessing the experiences of older people to continue to contribute to society well beyondretirement age in ways which generate better well-being and thereby not only reduce the cost burden, but also create newmodels for society where the wisdom of the elderly, once treasured so much in ancient cultures could be renewed andregenerated. Please contact me if you would like to share your experiences and ideas.Confirmed speakers include Lucia Pannese of Imaginary, David Burden of Daden Ltd, Cat Oxley from Great Ormond StreetHospital and VirtualityBook your FREE place at www.dmugamesfeb26.eventbrite.co.ukFeb 27th - Games and Immersive Technologies for Community Engagement and Empowerment (sponsored by the DMUDe Montfort University is a thought leader in the role of Universities within their local community and the DMU Square Mile

The most common reason foor “gamifying” a process is a very multidisciplinary activity in which the partners have very little in common and find communicationI have developed a new one or two day workshop for beginners who want to understand how to apply games and immersive technoworkshop includes an introduction and analysis of different technologies and applications and uses structured brainstorming sessionwhere these technologies can solve organisational problems and/or bring competitive advantage. For more details contact me at david@davidwortley.comArchived Presentations, Images and VideosI am archiving as many of my previous presentation, videos and event images as possible.
