    • Luke 1 5-6 There was in the days ofHerod, the king of Judaea, acertain priest named Zacharias, ofthe course of Abia: and his wifewas of the daughters ofAaron, and her name wasElisabeth. And they were bothrighteous before God, walking inall the Commandments andOrdinances of the Lord blameless. 2
    • 7-10 And they had no child, becausethat Elisabeth was barren, and theyboth were now well stricken in years.And it came to pass, that while heexecuted the priests office beforeGod in the order of his course, Ac-cording to the custom of the priestsoffice, his lot was to burn incensewhen he went into the temple ofthe Lord. And the whole multitudeof the people were praying withoutat the time of incense. 3
    • 11-13 And there appeared untohim an angel of the Lordstanding on the right side ofthe altar of incense. And whenZacharias saw him, he wastroubled, and fear fell uponhim. But the angel said untohim, Fear not, Zacharias: forthy prayer is heard; and thywife Elisabeth shall bear thee ason, and thou shalt call hisname John. 4
    • 14-16 And thou shalt have joy andgladness; and many shall rejoiceat his birth. For he shall be greatin the sight of the Lord, and shalldrink neither wine nor strongdrink; and he shall be filled withthe Holy Ghost, even from hismothers womb. And many ofthe children of Israel shall heturn to the Lord their God. 5
    • 17 And he shall go before Himin the spirit and power ofElias, to turn the hearts of thefathers to the children, and thedisobedient to the Wisdom ofthe just; to make ready apeople prepared for the Lord. 6
    • 18-20 And Zacharias said unto theangel, Whereby shall I know this? for Iam an old man, and my wife well strickenin years. And the angel answering saidunto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in thePresence of God; and am sent to speakunto thee, and to shew thee these gladtidings. And, behold, thou shalt bedumb, and not able to speak, until the daythat these things shall beperformed, because thou believest not mywords, which shall be fulfilled in theirseason. 7
    • 21-23 And the people waited forZacharias, and marveled that hetarried so long in the temple. Andwhen he came out, he could notspeak unto them: and they perceivedthat he had seen a vision in thetemple: for he beckoned untothem, and remained speechless. 23And it came to pass, that, as soon asthe days of his ministration wereaccomplished, he departed to hisown house. 8
    • 24-25 Andafter those days his wifeElisabeth conceived, and hid herselffive months, saying, Thus hath theLord dealt with me in the dayswherein He looked on me, to takeaway my reproach among men. 9
    • 26-28 And in the sixth month theangel Gabriel was sent from Godunto a city of Galilee, namedNazareth, to a virgin espoused toa man whose name wasJoseph, of the house of David;and the virgins name was Mary.And the angel came in untoher, and said, Hail, thou that arthighly favored, the Lord is withthee: blessed art thou amongwomen. 10
    • 29-31 And when she saw him, shewas troubled at his saying, andcast in her mind what manner ofsalutation this should be. Andthe angel said unto her, Fearnot, Mary: for thou hast foundfavor with God.And, behold, thou shalt conceivein thy womb, and bring forth ason, and shalt call his nameJESUS. 11
    • 32-33He shall be great, and shallbe called the Son of theHighest: and the Lord God shallgive unto Him the throne of Hisfather David: And He shallreign over the house of Jacobforever; and of His Kingdomthere shall be no end. 12
    • 34-35Then said Mary unto theangel, How shall this be, seeingI know not a man? And theangel answered and said untoher, The Holy Ghost shall comeupon thee, and the Power of theHighest shall overshadow thee:therefore also that holy thingwhich shall be born of theeshall be called the Son of God. 13
    • 36-38 And, behold, thy cousinElisabeth, she hath alsoconceived a son in her old age:and this is the sixth month withher, who was called barren. Forwith God nothing shall beimpossible. And Marysaid, Behold the handmaid ofthe Lord; be it unto meaccording to thy word. And theangel departed from her. 14
    • 39-40 AndMary arose in thosedays, and went into the hillcountry with haste, into a city ofJuda; and entered into the houseof Zacharias, and salutedElisabeth.41 And it came topass, that, when Elisabeth heardthe salutation of Mary, the babeleaped in her womb; andElisabeth was filled with theHoly Ghost: 15
    • 42-45 And she spake out with a loudvoice, and said, Blessed art thouamong women, and blessed is thefruit of thy womb. And whence isthis to me, that the mother of myLord should come to me?For, lo, as soon as the voice of thysalu-tation sounded in mineears, the babe leaped in my wombfor joy. And blessed is she thatbelieved: for there shall be aperformance of those thingswhich were told her from theLord. 16
    • 46-48And Mary said, My souldoth magnify the Lord, and myspirit hath rejoiced in God mySavior. For He hath regarded thelow estate of His handmaiden:for, behold, from henceforth allgenerations shall call me blessed. 17
    • 49-52For He that is mighty hathdone to me great things; andholy is His Name. And HisMercy is on them that fear Himfrom generation to generation.He hath shewed Strength withHis Arm; He hath scattered theproud in the imagination of theirhearts. He hath put down themighty from their seats, andexalted them of low degree. 18
    • 53-56 Hehath filled the hungrywith good things; and the richHe hath sent empty away. Hehath holpen His servant Israel, inremembrance of His Mercy; AsHe spake to our fathers, toAbraham, and to his seed forever. And Mary abode with herabout three months, and returnedto her own house. 19
    • 57-59 Now Elisabeths full timecame that she should be delivered;and she brought forth a son. Andher neighbors and her cousinsheard how the Lord had shewedgreat mercy upon her; and theyrejoiced with her. And it came topass, that on the eighth day theycame to circumcise the child; andthey called him Zacharias, afterthe name of his father. 20
    • 60-63 And his mother answeredand said, Not so; but he shallbe called John. And they saidunto her, There is none of thykindred that is called by thisname. And they made signs tohis father, how he would havehim called. And he asked fora writing table, andwrote, saying, His name isJohn. And they marveled all. 21
    • 64-66 And his mouth was openedimmediately, and his tongueloosed, and he spake, and praisedGod. And fear came on all thatdwelt round about them: and allthese sayings were noised abroadthroughout all the hill country ofJudaea. And all they that heardthem laid them up in theirhearts, saying, What manner ofchild shall this be! And the Handof the Lord was with him. 22
    • 67-68 And his father Zacha-rias was filled with theHoly Ghost, and prophe-sied, saying, Blessed be theLord God of Israel; for Hehath visited and redeemedHis people, and hath raisedup an horn of salvation forus in the house of Hisservant David; 23
    • 70-72 AsHe spake by themouth of His holyprophets, which have beensince the world began: Thatwe should be saved fromour enemies, and from thehand of all that hate us; Toperform the mercy promisedto our fathers, and toremember His HolyCovenant; 24
    • 73-76 Theoath which He sware to our fatherAbraham, that He would grant unto us, that webeing delivered out of the hand of our enemiesmight serve Him without fear, in holiness andrighteousness before Him, all the days of our life.7And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of theHighest: for thou shalt go before the face of theLord to prepare His Ways; 25
    • 77-79 To give knowledge ofsalvation unto His people bythe remission of theirsins, through the tender mercyof our God; whereby theDayspring from on High hathvisited us, to give light to themthat sit in darkness and in theshadow of death, to guide ourfeet into the way of peace. 26
    • 80 And the childgrew, and waxed strongin spirit, and was in thedeserts till the day of hisshewing unto Israel. 27
