  4. 4. Paul is speaking to the mob inJerusalem, after he returned from his third missionary journey.Personal Testimony Jesus struck him down with a bright light on the road to Damascus; He was going there to persecute Christians.“Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou Me?” 4
  5. 5. 10 And I said, What shall Ido, Lord? And the Lord said unto me,Arise, and go into Damas-cus; and there it shall be toldthee of all things which areappointed for thee to do. 11And when I could not seefor the glory of that light, being led by the hand of Good question:them that were with me, I What shall I do Lord?came into Damascus. 5
  6. 6. Paul was a proud man; he needed to learn humility.Proverbs 16 18 Pride goeth before destruction, andan haughty spirit before a fall.Ecclesiastes 7 8 Better is the end of a thing than thebeginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is betterthan the proud in spirit. Pride makes a man or woman impatient. Humility enables us to wait on the Lord and to finish well. 6
  7. 7. Paul had to be led by the hand after his first meeting with Jesus. And he had to wait on one of those he was planning to persecute to tell him what to do.God arranged two things that would teach Paul the humility he needed to serve the Lord. 7
  8. 8. 12-13 And one Ananias, adevout man according to thelaw, having a good report ofall the Jews which dweltthere, came unto me, andstood, and said unto me,Brother Saul, receive thysight. And the same hour Ilooked up upon him.Paul was accused of hating Jews and the Law of Moses. Evidence that he did not. 8
  9. 9. 14 And Ananias said, The God of our fathers hathchosen thee, that thou shouldest know His Will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the Voiceof His mouth. 15 For thou shalt be His witness untoall men of what thou hast seen and heard. Paul had been doing what God called him to do. For that this mob had been about to kill him. People won’t always like us for doing God’s Will; it won’t always make us popular. 9
  10. 10. 16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and bebaptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on theName of the Lord. 17 And it came to pass, that, when I was come again to Jerusalem, even while Iprayed in the temple, I was in a trance; 18 And sawHim saying unto me, Make haste, and get theequickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receivethy testimony concerning Me. This happened right after Paul was saved. It was not time for him to die. God had work for him to do. 10
  11. 11. 19 And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisonedand beat in every synagogue them that believed onThee: 20 And when the blood of Thy martyrStephen was shed, I also was standing by, andconsenting unto his death, and kept the raiment ofthem that slew him.Paul thought that the dramatic change in him would help the unbelieving Jews to accept the Gospel. But God knew their hearts; Their hearts were hardened against Jesus. 11
  12. 12. 21 And He said unto me, Depart: for I will send theefar hence unto the Gentiles. 22 And they gave himaudience unto this word, and then lifted up theirvoices, and said, Away with such a fellow from theearth: for it is not fit that he should live. 23 And asthey cried out, and cast off their clothes, and threwdust into the air, They were listening until Paul said that God had sent him to the Gentiles. That ended their patience. Berserk! 12
  13. 13. 24 The chief captain commanded him to be broughtinto the castle, and bade that he should beexamined by scourging; that he might knowwherefore they cried so against him. 25 And as theybound him with thongs, Paul said unto thecenturion that stood by, Is it lawful for you toscourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned? Why did Paul wait until this time to reveal that he was a Roman citizen?I don’t know; Paul was led by the Holy Spirit. 13
  14. 14. 26 When the centurion heard that, he went and toldthe chief captain, saying, Take heed what thoudoest: for this man is a Roman. 27 Then the chiefcaptain came, and said unto him, Tell me, art thou aRoman? He said, Yea. 28 And the chief captainanswered, With a great sum obtained I thisfreedom. And Paul said, But I was free born. 14
  15. 15. 29 Then straightway they departed from him whichshould have examined him: and the chief captainalso was afraid, after he knew that he was aRoman, and because he had bound him. 30 On themorrow, because he would have known thecertainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews, heloosed him from his bands, and commanded thechief priests and all their council to appear, andbrought Paul down, and set him before them. 15
  16. 16. Born Free! We are born free – born of the Spirit of God into the family of God.2 Corinthians 3 17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: andwhere the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.Galatians 5 13 For, brethren, ye have been calledunto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion tothe flesh, but by love serve one another. 16
  17. 17. Understand – we are not set free to wallow in sin;We are set free from the bondage of sin and its destruction. We are born free. 17
