  2. 2. 22 Samuel 13 From henceforward David wasfollowed with one trouble after another. Adulteryand murder were Davids sins, the like sins amonghis children were the beginnings of his punishment:he was too indulgent to his children.Matthew Henry Concise Bible CommentaryEphesians 6 4 And, ye fathers, provoke not yourchildren to wrath: but bring them up in the nurtureand admonition of the Lord.Don’t nag and fuss; don’t be harsh.Use loving discipline to train children.
  3. 3. 32 Samuel 13 1 And it came topass after this, that Absalomthe son of David had a fairsister, whose name wasTamar; and Amnon the son ofDavid loved her. 2 And Amnonwas so vexed, that he fell sickfor his sister Tamar; for shewas a virgin; and Amnonthought it hard for him to doanything to her.LovesickOnly lustObsessivelust
  4. 4. 4Leviticus 20:17 (TLB) "If a man has sexualintercourse with his sister, whether the daughter ofhis father or of his mother, it is a shameful thing, and they shall publicly be cut off from the peopleof Israel. He shall bear his guilt.Love doesn’t desire to drag the beloved intosin.Love wants only the best for the beloved.Lust cares only for itself.
  5. 5. 5Tamar was Absalom’s full sister. She was Amnon’s half sister. But, to lust after her and take her was still sin.2 Samuel 12 11 Thus saith the LORD (to David),Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thineown house, and I will take thy wives before thineeyes, and give them unto thy neighbor, and he shalllie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.The beginning of his troubles!
  6. 6. 63 But Amnon had a friend, whose name wasJonadab, the son of Shimeah Davids brother (firstcousins): and Jonadab was a very subtil (cunning)man. 4 And he said unto him, Why art thou, beingthe kings son, lean from day to day? wilt thou nottell me? And Amnon said unto him, I love Tamar,my brother Absaloms sister.Amnon didn’t mention that Tamar was hissister; he called her Absalom’s sister. But Jonadab knew.
  7. 7. 75 And Jonadab said unto him, Lay thee down on thybed, and make thyself sick: and when thy fathercometh to see thee, say unto him, I pray thee, letmy sister Tamar come, and give me meat, and dressthe meat in my sight, that I may see it, and eat it ather hand.An evil plotIt begins with deception, and it grows.
  8. 8. 86 So Amnon lay down, and made himself sick(pretended): and when the king was come to seehim, Amnon said unto the king, I pray thee, letTamar my sister come, and make me a couple ofcakes in my sight, that I may eat at her hand. 7 ThenDavid sent home to Tamar, saying, Go now to thybrother Amnons house, and dress him meat.David didn’t see what was going on withAmnon; he closed his eyes.
  9. 9. 92 Samuel 5:13 (KJV) And David took him moreconcubines and wives out of Jerusalem, after hewas come from Hebron: and there were yet sonsand daughters born to David. This was the custom of the day, but it wasforbidden by God.
  10. 10. 10Deuteronomy 17 15 Thou shalt in any wise set himking over thee, whom the LORD thy God shallchoose: one from among thy brethren shalt thou setking over thee: thou mayest not set a stranger overthee, which is not thy brother. 16 But he shall notmultiply horses to himself, nor cause the people toreturn to Egypt, to the end that he should multiplyhorses: forasmuch as the LORD hath said untoyou, Ye shall henceforth return no more that way.17 Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, thathis heart turn not away: neither shall he greatlymultiply to himself silver and gold.
  11. 11. 11David had taken many wives and concubines, andeach wife would have had her own house or herown apartment in the palace. Each wanted her son to be the next king.Jealousy and intrigue would have beeneverywhere.God warned them not to do it, andthey did it anyway.
  12. 12. 12Deuteronomy 17 18 And it shall be, when he sittethupon the throne of his kingdom, that he shall writehim a copy of this law in a book out of that whichis before the priests the Levites: 19 And it shall bewith him, and he shall read therein all the days ofhis life: that he may learn to fear the LORD hisGod, to keep all the Words of this Law and theseStatutes, to do them:He should not have been ignorant. Each king was to make his own copy.
  13. 13. 138 So Tamar went to her brother Amnons house; andhe was laid down. And she took flour, and kneadedit, and made cakes in his sight, and did bake thecakes. 9 And she took a pan, and poured them outbefore him; but he refused to eat. And Amnon said,Have out all men from me. And they went outevery man from him.
  14. 14. 1410 And Amnon said unto Tamar, Bring the meat intothe chamber, that I may eat of thine hand. AndTamar took the cakes which she had made, andbrought them into the chamber to Amnon herbrother. 11 And when she had brought them untohim to eat, he took hold of her, and said unto her,Come lie with me, my sister.Evil desires grow into evil plans which growinto attempts to fullfil the desires.
  15. 15. 1512 And she answered him, Nay, my brother, do notforce me; for no such thing ought to be done inIsrael: do not thou this folly. 13 And I, whither shallI cause my shame to go? and as for thee, thou shaltbe as one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, Ipray thee, speak unto the king; for he will notwithhold me from thee.Tamar was willing to become his wife, but shewas not willing to just have sex with him. But, remember, this kind of relationship wasstrictly forbidden by the Law.
  16. 16. 1613b Now therefore, I pray thee, speak unto the king;for he will not withhold me from thee.David would have indulged his oldest son, eventhough his desire was contrary to God’s Law.Indulgent parents raise self-centered children.
  17. 17. 1714 Howbeit he would not hearken unto her voice:but, being stronger than she, forced her, and laywith her. 15 Then Amnon hated her exceedingly; sothat the hatred wherewith he hated her was greaterthan the love wherewith he had loved her. AndAmnon said unto her, Arise, be gone.Amnon said he loved Tamar, but it was not love – it was only vile lust.He used her and cast her away.
  18. 18. 18James 1 13 Let no man say when he is tempted, Iam tempted of God: for God cannot be temptedwith evil, neither tempteth he any man: 14 But everyman is tempted, when he is drawn away of his ownlust, and enticed. 15 Then when lust hath conceived,it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. This Truth was fulfilled in Amnon.
