  3. 3. Witch of Endor Samuel came up He told Saul he was going to lose the battle, Israel would be defeated by the Philistines, and Saul and his sons would die. Reminder: David and his men have been living with the Philistines for about sixteen months (27:7) 3
  4. 4. 1 Samuel 29 1 Now thePhilistines gathered to-gether all their armies toAphek: and the Israelitespitched by a fountain(springs) which is in Jezreel.… some 40 miles northeast ofAphek. The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures by Dallas Seminary Faculty. 4
  5. 5. 2 And the lords of thePhilistines passed on byhundreds, and by thousands:but David and his men passedon in the rereward (rear ofthe army) with Achish (theking). 5
  6. 6. 3a Then said the princes of thePhilistines, What do theseHebrews here?Achish trusted David, but his warlords did not. I think that God is moving David out of the battle. 6
  7. 7. 3b And Achish said unto the princes of thePhilistines, Is not this David, the servant of Saulthe king of Israel, which hath been with me thesedays, or these years (16 months), and I have foundno fault in him since he fell unto me unto this day? Achish found no fault because he wasn’t looking for fault, and that was God. David had fought against the allies of the Philistines, lied about it, slaughtered the people. Achish never caught on. 7
  8. 8. David made amonkey out of him. 8
  9. 9. 4 And the princes of the Philistines were wroth withAchish; and the princes of the Philistines said untohim, Make this fellow return, that he may go againto his place which thou hast appointed him, and lethim not go down with us to battle, lest in the battlehe be an adversary to us: for wherewith should hereconcile himself unto his master? should it not bewith the heads of these men? 5 Is not this David, ofwhom they sang one to another in dances, saying,Saul slew his thousands, and David his tenthousands? 9
  10. 10. Achish was fooled, but his warlords were not. They remembered their history. And they were right; David would have turned against them in the battle. They demanded that Achish send David back to Ziklag. 10
  11. 11. 6 Then Achish called David, and said unto him,Surely, as the LORD liveth, thou hast been upright, and thy going out and thy coming in with me in thehost is good in my sight: for I have not found evilin thee since the day of thy coming unto me untothis day: nevertheless the lords favor thee not.7 Wherefore now return, and go in peace, that thoudisplease not the lords of the Philistines. Achish had no choice; he could not fight without his warlords. 11
  12. 12. 8 And David said unto Achish, But what have Idone? and what hast thou found in thy servant solong as I have been with thee unto this day, that Imay not go fight against the enemies of my lord theking? This is fake regret from David. 12
  13. 13. 9 And Achish answered and said to David, I knowthat thou art good in my sight, as an angel of God:notwithstanding the princes of the Philistines havesaid, He shall not go up with us to the battle. Again -- no choice! 13
  14. 14. 10 Wherefore now rise up early in the morning withthy masters servants that are come with thee: andas soon as ye be up early in the morning, and havelight, depart. Take your men and leave at first light in the morning. 14
  15. 15. 11 So David and his men roseup early to depart in themorning, to return into the landof the Philistines. And thePhilistines went up to Jezreel. David is out of it, as God would have it. The battle is about to begin. Israel is going to lose and lose big! 15
  16. 16. Points to PonderAchish trusted David, although David had lied to him throughout his stay in his country. He wasn’t looking for fault in David. He liked David. We see what we are looking for. Look for fault – find it. Look for good – find it.Love looks for the good in people. 16
  17. 17. The Philistine warlords remembered their history and were not fooled by David. We need to remember lessons learned.2 Peter 3 1 This second epistle, beloved, I nowwrite unto you; in both which I stir up your pureminds by way of remembrance: 2 That ye may bemindful of the words which were spoken before bythe holy prophets, and of the Commandment of usthe apostles of the Lord and Savior: 17
