  2. 2. 1 Samuel 17 1 Now the Philistines gathered toge- ther their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongeth to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephesd- ammim. 2 And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines. www.rossvillechurch.comJune 3, 2012 781 Salem Road, Rossville, GA 30741 2
  3. 3. 3 And the Philistinesstood on a mountain onthe one side, and Israelstood on a mountain onthe other side: andthere was a valleybetween them. 3
  4. 4. 4 And there went out achampion out of the camp ofthe Philistines, namedGoliath, of Gath, whoseheight was six cubits and aspan (99"). 4
  5. 5. 5 And he had an helmet of brass upon his head, andhe was armed with a coat of mail; and the weightof the coat was five thousand shekels of brass (125lbs). 6 And he had greaves of brass upon hislegs, and a target of brass between his shoulders.7 And the staff of his spear was like a weaversbeam; and his spears head weighed six hundredshekels (15 lbs) of iron: and one bearing a shieldwent before him. 5
  6. 6. Formidable enemy We have such an enemy; the devil. We cant stand against the devil in our own strength and wisdom. We must stand in the Power of God, wearing Gods spiritual armor. 6
  7. 7. 8 And he stood and cried unto the armies ofIsrael, and said unto them, Why are ye come out toset your battle in array? am not I a Philistine, andye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, andlet him come down to me. 9 If he be able to fightwith me, and to kill me, then will we be yourservants: but if I prevail against him, and killhim, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us. 10And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israelthis day; give me a man, that we may fighttogether. 7
  8. 8. 11 When Saul and all Israelheard those words of thePhilistine, they weredismayed, and greatly afraid. The Spirit of God has departed from Saul. The armies are following a false king. Backsliders are always afraid. They dont always admit it, but they always know it in their innermost being. They are afraid they will need God, and He wont be there for them. 8
  9. 9. 12 Now David was the son of that Ephrathite ofBethlehem-Judah, whose name was Jesse; and hehad eight sons: and the man went among men foran old man in the days of Saul. 13 And the threeeldest sons of Jesse went and followed Saul to thebattle: and the names of his three sons that went tothe battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next untohim Abinadab, and the third Shammah. 14 AndDavid was the youngest: and the three eldestfollowed Saul. 9
  10. 10. 1 Sam 17:15 But David went and returned from Saul tofeed his fathers sheep at Bethlehem.1 Samuel 16 21 And David came to Saul, and stoodbefore him: and he loved him greatly; and hebecame his armor-bearer. 22 And Saul sent toJesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand beforeme; for he hath found favor in my sight. 23 And itcame to pass, when the evil spirit from God wasupon Saul, that David took an harp, and playedwith his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and waswell, and the evil spirit departed from him. 10
  11. 11. 16 Andthe Philistine drew near morning andevening, and presented himself forty days. Not one of the men of Israel challenged him. Yellow was their color. 11
  12. 12. 17 And Jesse said unto David his son, Take now forthy brethren an ephah of this parched corn, andthese ten loaves, and run to the camp to thybrethren; 18 And carry these ten cheeses unto thecaptain of their thousand, and look how thybrethren fare, and take their pledge. Jesse wanted word from his sons. God wanted David on the battlefield. 12
  13. 13. 19 Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with thePhilistines. They called it fighting, but it was cowering. 13
  14. 14. King Saul was rebellious against God, and God had withdrawn His Spirit from Saul. They had not the courage of faith. Without faith in God, and fellowship with God, fear is inevitable.Jesse has sent David carrying food for his brothers and their commanding officer. He wants news of the battle. 14
  15. 15. 20 And David rose up early in the morning, and leftthe sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, asJesse had commanded him; and he came to thetrench, as the host was going forth to the fight, andshouted for the battle. 21 For Israel and thePhilistines had put the battle in array, army againstarmy. They had been doing this every morning monotonously for forty days. But Gods man is on the scene this morning. 15
  16. 16. 22 And David left his carriage in the hand of thekeeper of the carriage, and ran into the army, andcame and saluted his brethren. 23 And as he talkedwith them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of thearmies of the Philistines, and spake according tothe same words: and David heard them. Just as he is greeting his older brothers, Goliath comes out and makes his challenge. 16
  17. 17. 24 And all the men of Israel, when they saw theman, fled from him, and were sore afraid. There is nothing sadder than God Almightys people shaking in fear of the devil. But they are a backslidden people following a backslidden king. 17
  18. 18. We must stay in close fellowship with God.If there is distance between us and God, sin is to blame.James 4 8 Draw nigh to God, and He will draw nighto you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purifyyour hearts, ye double minded. 9 Be afflicted, andmourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned tomourning, and your joy to heaviness. 10 Humbleyourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He shall liftyou up. 18
  19. 19. Dont let sin break your fellowship with God.Make up your mind, once and for always, to serve God and live your life His Way. You will have the courage of faith. 19
