Salvation Army Clinical Rotation; Lisa Bell
Clinic Details:
Clinical hours; 3-4 days/week beginning January 1. 8am-4pm, and 5:30-?
Staff: Two clinical dentists, one office manager/RDH, Marquette University
dental students, adjunct faculty from UW public health (Thurs eve).
Setting: 4 clinic chairs (one for radiography only), and a dental laboratory.
Population served: homeless, or almost homeless.
Services provided: everything but dental implants. Complicated extractions
or compromised medical histories referred out.
Starting small with first year, second semester dental hygiene students beginning
January 2013. Then expanding to second year students in 2014.
Duties performed by our students, under direct supervision of clinical dentist in a
non-educational setting would need to be determined. We would want this to be
a hands-on experience, not just an observation rotation. Possible duties include;
taking digital x-rays and pano, polishing, ultrasonic’s, patient education and
nutritional counseling, sealant and fluoride applications.
Students would receive clinical points for this rotation. Lisa would ensure patients
are present on student rotations days.
