In the Netherlands 1 million people suffer from a food allergy. With an average household size of 2.2 people, this means that more than 2 million Dutch people are faced with this. However 25% to 30% of the Dutch population suffer from, or believe they suffer from, a food allergy. 3 2011

About food allergies Main official allergens: - Grains that contain gluten (wheat, rye, barley, oat, spelt, kamut) - Crustaceans - Eggs - Fish - Groundnuts (peanuts) - Soy - Milk (including lactose) - Nuts (such as for example almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, pecans, etc.) - Celery - Mustard - Sesame seed - Sulphite - Lupin - Molluscs 10 allergens according to the LeDa list in addition to the aforementioned 14 official allergens. - Lactose - Cacao - Glutamate - Coriander - Maize - Legumes - Beef - Pork - Chicken - Carrot 4 2011

Results of consumer researchIn collaboration with the Dutch Food Allergy Foundation, Dutch Spices recently performed online consumer researchinto allergen-free food.Highlights of the research- 68% of the respondents said that the food allergy affects the everyday eating pattern in the household to a great extent.- For 80% of the respondents, the supermarket is the primary purchasing channel of food.- For the majority of the respondents (88%), packaging is the main source of information as regards allergens.- Whilst 67% of the participants said that the packaging does not provide sufficient information about allergens. 8 2011
