Either way, the project has been assigned and there’s not much we can do about it. No matter how much we discuss the subject whether or not we agree or disagree on if the project should have been made or how it is being graded it still not going to change a thing. I will say I do learn more when we watch the videos in class, but doing projects beats taking tests or quizes everyday, in my opinion.

    I agree with guest6b810. I do enjoy Mr. Duez’s class a lot.
And I do agree with the statement that in college if you take an art or architecture class, you may be asked to build a castle. However, we are not in Art or Architecture Pre-AP. We are in World History Pre-AP. While building a caslte may teach you a thing or two about medieval defense systems, it is a lot of work to learn about something that was already covered in a video we watched.

As I noted earlier, please see me if you have a problem with the project. It was assigned a month ago and there has already been plenty of time to iron our the problems you have with it face to face. None of these comments mean ANYTHING without a name attached to them. Your anonymous comments have no weight without a name. If you do not wish to 'build' a castle, please draw it. As I have mentioned a couple of thousand times, the most important part of the project is the paper. I will be grading the essay by looking for improvements in the concepts of comparing and contrasting. The thesis statement and conclusion are very important. As I have been doing this weekend, if you would like feedback on the paper, please email it to me.

    I guess...but I don’t see how a defense system is a 'medieval EVENT.'
Like I said; I’ve pretty much agreed with Mr. Duez thus far, but I’m just not as quick to jump on the train about this castle project. I think the essay aspect is relevant, just not the fact we are partially being graded on 'artistic creativity.' Let the record show, I’m not chastising Mr. Duez. I respect him and really enjoy his class. I just feel like I should voice my opinion anonymously.

It helped me remember by the many types of defensive systems some castles were using. Such as the archers within the castle walls or even the holes above the gatehouse that were used to release large bolders and crush its victims. That is what I meant about remembering medival events. I guess, it just depends who you are. I’m more of an artistic kind of person so I guess that’s why I enjoyed it so much.

How does an arts and crafts project help you 'remember medieval events'? Just wondering...It’s not the fact that it is time consuming, more so the fact that it doesn’t seem entirely relevant.
Mr. Duez, I really enjoy your class. I really do. But I just don’t understand this castle project.
Like I said in my first comment, I agree with quest7dc8e.

I would have to disagree with that last comment. I am also in Pre-Ap World History and I learned alot from this project. I learned more about the castle I was comparing it to and why it was made. Also, college professors would give you assignments like this if you majored in architecture or art(sculpting). This project is also alot of fun, time consuming yes, but fun. It is also easy to remember certain medival events that happend in the past. In conclusion, I say the project was very enjoyable.

I agree. I fail to see how an arts and crafts project is supposed to broaden my knowledge of world history. I somewhat understand the concept, but if we’re supposed to be preparing for college, a comparative or research paper would have sufficed. But I really can’t understand how this will significantly help us when we have a test over 2 chapters about Feudalism, Germanic Kingdoms, the Carolingian Renaissance, and Medieval government. No amount of Popsicle sticks, glue, and construction paper will help me write a college paper. I fail to see the 'Pre-AP' aspect of this course in this project.

I fail to see why we are building a castle in a Pre-AP class. This class is supposed to be preparing us for college. However, in college I find it extremely difficult to believe that the professors would have us build castles. This project is a waste of time that could be better spent studying for the two chapter test that is that same week. Also, it teaches us absolutely nothing about world history and therefore makes our grade an innacurate representation of knowledge of the subject.

Castle Project - Presentation Transcript

  1. Castle Project Tower of London & Chateau de Vincennes In France
  2. Castles of Europe
    • Poster or Model
    • The design must be complete and detailed and must give the viewer a true sense of what the castle will look like when it is actually built.
    • Models must be able to fit on top of a desk in the classroom. Do not make them too big – I will take off points!
    • The castle needs to be built well enough to survive the trip from your house to school. A castle that falls apart once it gets here is hard to grade.
  3. Choose a Location
    • Pick a place to put your castle – it should be a place on the world map.
    • Research that place and build a castle that would protect it
