  • United States in Latin America Objective: Cover Americans involvement in Latin America
  • Winning Control of the Panama Canal
    • Panama was controlled by Columbia
    • A French company attempted to start the project but failed
    • Panamanian people wanted the trade the canal would bring
    • America offers to buy the right to build the canal but Columbia wants too much
  • Winning Control of the Panama Canal
    • President Roosevelt sends an American Warship to help Panama win its freedom
    • Panama wins in three days
    • U.S. quickly signs a treaty with Panama
    • U.S. would build canal and control a ten mile zone around canal
  • Building the Canal
    • Area around canal had many mosquitoes that carried yellow fever and malaria
    • These diseases killed many workers
    • Col. Gorgas drain swamps and cut down tall grass to kill off mosquitoes
    • The Canal open in 1914

    • Roosevelt's involvement in Panama is an example of Big Stick Diplomacy
    • Based on the Monroe Doctrine Roosevelt believed the U.S. could act as a police officer in Latin America by using Military force to settle problems
