Winning Control of the Panama Canal <ul><li>Panama was controlled by Columbia </li></ul><ul><li>A French company attempted to start the project but failed </li></ul><ul><li>Panamanian people wanted the trade the canal would bring </li></ul><ul><li>America offers to buy the right to build the canal but Columbia wants too much </li></ul>

Winning Control of the Panama Canal <ul><li>President Roosevelt sends an American Warship to help Panama win its freedom </li></ul><ul><li>Panama wins in three days </li></ul><ul><li>U.S. quickly signs a treaty with Panama </li></ul><ul><li>U.S. would build canal and control a ten mile zone around canal </li></ul>
  4. 4. Building the Canal <ul><li>Area around canal had many mosquitoes that carried yellow fever and malaria </li></ul><ul><li>These diseases killed many workers </li></ul><ul><li>Col. Gorgas drain swamps and cut down tall grass to kill off mosquitoes </li></ul><ul><li>The Canal open in 1914 </li></ul>
  5. 5. Diplomacy in Latin America <ul><li>Roosevelt's involvement in Panama is an example of Big Stick Diplomacy </li></ul><ul><li>Based on the Monroe Doctrine Roosevelt believed the U.S. could act as a police officer in Latin America by using Military force to settle problems </li></ul>
  6. 6. Diplomacy in Latin America <ul><li>Taft’s policy was known as Dollar Diplomacy </li></ul><ul><li>This policy encouraged the growth of American business in Latin America </li></ul>

Diplomacy in Latin America <ul><li>Wilson supports Poncho Villa in Mexico </li></ul><ul><li>Then changes mind and supports his enemies </li></ul><ul><li>Poncho Villa enters U.S. and killed some Americans in 1916 </li></ul><ul><li>Wilson orders Gen. Pershing to captured Villa </li></ul><ul><li>Villa is never captured </li></ul>
