  • 2. The End Of The Civil War Objective: Cover Civil War from the Emancipation to Lincoln’s Assassination
  • 3. Emancipation Proclamation
    • Lincoln always thought slavery was wrong
    • After Antietam he took action
    • Granted Emancipation to all slaves in states that were in rebellion only
    • Slavery was still allowed in the union
  • 4. Emancipation did three things
    • 1. Gave union soldiers two things to fight for end slavery and save the Union
    • 2. Encouraged slaves to escape and join Union Army
    • 3. Europeans decided not to help Confederates when they learn slavery was an issue
  • 5. Battle of Gettysburg
    • Lincoln picks Mead to replace McClellan
    • Gettysburg is Lee’s last attempt at invading the north
    • 75,000 confederates and 90,000 Union soldiers fight for three days
    • Union wins but at a heavy price
    • Mead waits too long and Lee’s Army escapes
  • 6. Battle of Vicksburg
    • Grant’s Army laid siege to city
    • People eat dogs and rats to survive
    • Finally surrender
    • Union has full control of Mississippi River
    • Confederate Army now to weak to win war
    • Turning point of the war
  • 7. After Vicksburg
    • Lincoln appoints Grant commander of all Union forces
    • Grant orders Gen. Sherman to attack Atlanta, Ga.
    • Sherman starts March to the sea
  • 8. Sherman’s March to the Sea
    • Sherman’s Army uses total war on south
    • Destroys everything in his path
    • Houses, Railroads, Livestock, crops, factories
    • Burn Atlanta to the ground and continue toward Savannah, GA on the coast
    • Sherman’s March breaks the back of the Confederacy
  • 9. After the March
    • Lincoln is reelected
    • Lee’s forces become surrounded
    • Lee surrenders to Grant
    • Grant gives food and supplies to Lee’s men
    • Allows them to return home with their horses and mules.
  • 10. The War is over
    • 5 days after Lee surrenders Lincoln is assassinated
    • Over 620,000 Americans were killed
    • No other war in American history cost as many lives
    • Slavery was ended
    • The idea of secession was answered
