    1. Objective: Cover the relationship between labor and labor unions
      • If your 16 or older, a citizen, and looking for work you are apart of the labor force
      • Members of the Armed Forces are not considered members of the labor force
      • Not all workers make the same wage
      • The number of skills you have will affect the amount you get paid
      • In general more education equals more pay
      • Some discrimination is legal
      • Owners can hire who ever they want
      • Some jobs require you to pass a test in order to be hired
      • Other kinds of discrimination is illegal
      • Civil Rights Act of 1964 made it illegal to discriminate based on race, religion, sex, or national origin.
      • Over a hundred years ago many people worked on farms
      • Soon large factories began to appear in cities
      • At first workers were not treated well
      • Workers pay was low
      • Work conditions were unsafe
      • Workers responded by forming unions
      • The first union was Knights of Labor
      • Members worked and 8 hour day
      • Wanted to stop child labor
      • Workers used strikes to get what they wanted
      • AFL was only open to skilled workers
      • By 1920 it had 4 million workers
      • CIO was open to all workers
      • In 1955 AFL and CIO joined together
      • Has 13 million members
      • Members enjoy sick pay, paid holidays, vacation time, and insurance
      • Workers have a right to clean and safe work area
      • In 1945 over 35 million people belong to unions
      • Today fewer than 20 million belong to a union
