    • Objective: Cover the rise of Hitler to power in Germany
    • Adolf Hitler
    • Hitler And His Views
      • Hitler was born in Austria
      • He was a failure in school
      • He was an expert in using propaganda and terror
      • He served on the Western Front for 4 years during WWI
      • After he joined the National Socialist German Workers Party or Nazi Party for short
    • Hitler And His Views
      • Hitler quickly took over the Nazi Party within two years the party had grown to 55,000 members
      • In 1923 Hitler staged an uprising in Munich and was sent to prison
      • In prison he wrote “Mein Kampf” (My struggle) which outline his ideas and plans
      • His ideas combined Nationalism, anti-Semitism, and anti-Communism
      • He also believed strong nations should be able to expand beyond its borders (Lebensraum)
    • Rise of Nazism
      • Hitler realized the path to power was through legal means, not violent overthrow of government
      • After prison he worked hard to expand the Nazi party
      • By 1931 it was the largest party in the Reichstag
      • Germany was in a desperate economic situation which helped the Nazi’s achieve power
    • Victory of Nazism
      • In 1933 the Nazi party pressured the President to allow Hitler to become Chancellor and create a new government
      • Hitler then uses his powers to become a dictator
      • Once in power Hitler purged all Jews from the government and setup Concentration camps for Nazi opponents
      • The Nazis abolished all other political parties and named Hitler the Fuher (Leader)
    • The Nazi State Goals
      • Hitler wanted a Aryan racial state
      • Wanted to create a new Roman Empire
      • Hitler’s empire was called the Third Reich
      • Nazi’s used mass rallies, economic polices, organizations, and terror to control the people
      • Hitler used the “SS” to control the people by means of terror which included repression, murder, and death camps
    • Nazi Policy
      • Hitler used public works projects to employ people
      • He also began a massive rearmament program to stimulate the economy
      • Unemployment dropped and the depression seemed to be ending
      • Once in power the Nazi’s enacted policies called the Nuremberg laws which oppressed Jews
      • Night of the Broken Glass: pogrom unleashed by the Nazis on November 9-10, 1938. Throughout Germany and Austria, synagogues and other Jewish institutions were burned, Jewish stores were destroyed, and their contents looted. At the same time, approximately 35,000 Jewish men were sent to concentration camps.
