    1. Wu & Associates LLC ©2009 All Rights Reserved dswu@alumni.princeton.edu David.wu.wg82@wharton.upenn.edu Outline 1.We are running out of space on earth to grow as we added 6 billion people on earth in the last 300 years At the 20th century growth rate of 1.33% CAGR, there will be 25 billion people on earth by 2100 • • Population growth has an inflection point 300 years ago. Let’s examine two dimensions: • People (racial diversity and the most passionate human value: faith) • Natural Resources (oil and gas) required to sustain growth 2.What happened more than 300 years ago A. From the beginning to 10,000 years ago (before agriculture) • Origin of life billions of years ago • Origin of humans about 2 million years ago • Origin of Homo Sapiens Sapiens 40,000 years ago • Origin of oil and gas billions of years ago • Abiogenic vs biogenic origins • Tectonic plates and its impact on racial diversity and natural resources • With sparse interactions, humans have enjoyed substantial “free will” B. From 10,000 years ago to 300 years ago • Among the first human values: “Greed” emerged when agriculture produced more good than consumed • Languages emerged 5,000 years ago. Another human value emerged: “Pride” • Faith emerged 2,000 years ago with a positive attribute of controlling greed, but with the negative attribute of invoking so much pride and passion that faith started to erode “free will” • Until 500 years ago, human population was sparse so there was no need to take into consideration human interaction • The plague (diseases) and warfare have helped control population growth • As humans started to interact, conflicts emerged between human values and free will • Revolution in the USA 3.300 years ago to today A. Industrialization with machineries, then internet. The world has finite space, and we started to interact. B. Group dynamics across racial diversity and faith become important, hence the introduction of Maslow’s hierarchy. 4.The Future A. Faith is among the most passionate human values that require group dynamics to mitigate by respecting free will… • Integrate the concept of peace onto faith to fight against greed and too much pride • Mutual respect for personal relationships with God, without imposing faith onto others • Preserve natural resources such as oil and gas • Mutual respect not to use human inventions (e.g. weapons) to destroy earth
