INTRODUCTIONIm sure that you all have been to a public pool or a hotel pool. What is usuallyposted on a big sign near the pool? Whatare some of those rules and why are theyposted? (No glass containers, no running,no diving, no dunking, pushing etc.) Laws and rules have a good reason behind them. Lets look at the rules of God and the reasons behind them
STUDYING GOD’S WORD What are the three good purposes of Gods Law?
1 Timothy 1:9-109 We also know that law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy andirreligious; for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10 for adulterersand perverts, for slave traders and liars andperjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine
GODS LAW SERVES AS A CURBThe curb keeps people from sinning. If you go to the zoo you can see polar bears, black bears, lions and tigers, but you cant pet them. They are behind a fence or protective glass to keep them from reaching out and hurting you.Gods law is like that protective barrier. It keeps murderers and thieves from reaching out to harm you each day.
Romans 3:19-20 19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable toGod. 20 Therefore no one will be declaredrighteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.
GODS LAW SERVES AS A MIRROR.The Mirror show us our sin every day Think of a man traveling 80 MPH whenhe hears the siren of a police car behind him and sees flashing lights. The siren and lights acted as a mirror. Theyshowed the man that speeding is wrong and he deserves the punishment because he is guilty. Gods law showsus clearly that we have done wrong and are sinners.
Psalm 119:105Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.GODS LAW SERVES AS A GUIDELINE.
Gods Law shows us how He wants us to live. In Montana, there were suchterrible blizzards in which the wind blew sofiercely that people could get lost between the house and the barn. A seasoned rancher who knew that he would have to take care of the calves would fasten a rope between the house and the barn before the storm - a guideline. The falseideas of people and the world blind us, but Gods law is that guideline that keeps us on the right path.
GOD’S WORD IN MY LIFEEvaluate: Now that I am a Christian, I nolonger need Gods law as a curb or mirror.Evaluate: "It sure is a drag being aChristian. Look at all of the fun I miss outon because of the laws God wants me tofollow."
THE FIRST COMMANDMENT - You shall have no other gods What does this mean?We should fear, love and trust in God above all things.
STUDYING GOD’S WORD Why does God forbid us to have anyother Gods in the First Commandment?
Isaiah 45:21 It is I who made the earth and createdmankind upon it. My own hands stretchedout the heavens; I marshaled their starry hosts.
God tells us that He is the only True God. There can only be one genuine article.Anything else is an imitation. For example, many companies try to be like a namebrand but lower the quality, the price and try to make it fit like the real thing. The Lord God is the genuine article. There are not even any imitations.
Isaiah 42:8“I am the LORD; that is my name! I will not give my glory to another or my praise to idols.
Because there is only one true God, He insists that all glory be given to Him. Aboy had a hard working sister that spentthe whole day cleaning the house, even scrubbing the floors and cleaning theboys room for him. When dad and momcame home and asked, "Who did all the work?" the boy answered "I did!" His sister was angry for taking the “glory”that she deserved. So to with God who deserves all the glory for what He has done for us.
Matthew 22:37 Jesus replied: ”‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ God wants you to love Him more thananyone else. The account of Abraham and the sacrifice of Isaac showed God that he loved Him more than His own Son. Godheld the number one position in Abrahams heart even under these circumstances.
God is the only true God and wantsus to give him the glory He deserves by loving Him more than anyone or anything else.
GOD’S WORD IN MY LIFEEvaluate: It is wrong for me towant to make as much money as Ican.Agree or disagree and why? Ifwe could keep the FirstCommandment perfectly, we couldbe sinless.
CHRISTIAN VOCABULARYLaw as a CURB - Gods law helps topreserve order in the world by keeping thewicked actions of people within bounds.Law as a MIRROR - Gods law shows allpeople their sin and their need of a Savior.(SOS - Shows Our Sin)Law as a GUIDELINE - Gods law tellsChristians, surrounded by a sinful world, theway of life that is pleasing to God.
THE SECOND COMMANDMENT You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God. What does this mean? We should fear and love God that wedo not use his name to curse, swear, lie ordeceive or use witchcraft, but call uponHis name in every trouble, pray, praise, and give thanks.
STUDYING GOD’S WORDWhat is involved in the Lords name?
Exodus 3:14God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to theIsraelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”
God uses a title that only God could use toidentify himself. When Tiger Woods says, "I am the best golfer in the world," he has the swing and trophies to prove it. God simplysays, "I am" and he has the power and glory to prove it - (explain how "I am" says so much about our God.
Isaiah 9:6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on hisshoulders. And he will be called WonderfulCounselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
List the titles of this verse… Each ofthese titles is like a snap shot telling us something different about our God. Like in our countrys president. To ushe is "president", to his kids he is "dad" to his wife he is "husband, to his mom he is "son" - this is the same person different aspect - so too with Gods titles.
Romans 10:13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Knowing Gods name saves us. Knowing your friends name makes you happy, but your friend cant do anything for you when you are dying. Thats where the Lords name is different than any other. Knowingthe Lords name, namely Jesus and what he has done for us actually saves us.
The Lords name is every title andexpression in His Word that he uses to reveal Himself and the name by which we are saved.
CHRISTIAN VOCABULARYGods NAME – is every expressionthat God uses to refer to himself andeverything that is revealed about Him inHis Word.Curse - using Gods name to wish evilon someone or somethingSwear - using Gods name to assuresomeone that the truth is being told.
STUDYING GODS WORD How do people disobey these commandments?
Jeremiah 17:5This is what the LORD says: “Cursed is the one who trusts in man, whodepends on flesh for his strength and whose heart turns away from the LORD.
People disobey when they love anyone or anything more than God. Some people bow down to idols, some are obsessed with money, clothes and things of this world. Some love themselves and spend all their time, talents and money on makingthemselves look better. It is not wrongto love our parents, friends or spouse, but it is wrong to love or trust in them more than God. That is always a sin.
James 3:10Out of the same mouth come praise andcursing. My brothers, this should not be.We misuse Gods name by cursing - using Gods name to wish evil on someone. How many hammers are going to hell? You may think that is funny, but think ofwhat comes out of peoples mouths. It is silly to ask God to damn a hammer, sowhy do it? It is horrible to damn anotherperson - this is the language of the devil.
Matthew 5:33-37 33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break youroath, but keep the oaths you have made tothe Lord.’ 34 But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the GreatKing. 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white orblack. 37 Simply let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ andyour ‘No,’ ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.
People misuse Gods name by swearing uselessly. "Cross myheart, hope to die, stick a needle in my eye. I swear on a stack of Bibles. I swear on my mothersgrave. I swear to God.“ We should always tell the truth and let our "yes, be yes and "no " be no.
People disobey these commandments when they give glory or love tosomething more than God and when they curse or swear needlessly.
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.Give examples from your life of how youhave broken these two commandments.Explain how God purifies us from allunrighteousness (sin).

INTRODUCTION Perhaps you heard about the 7th DayAdventist Church. This church teaches that it is a sin to do any work on Saturday, the seventh day of the week. It also teachesthat God commands that you must worshipon Saturday, not on Sunday. Can you think of any reasons why they might believethese two things? (OT Sabbath day, beliefthese laws still apply.) Are we sinning if we do work on Saturday? Are we sinning byworshipping on Sunday? Lets see how this commandment applies to us.
THE THIRD COMMANDMENT - Remember the Sabbath Day by keeping it holy. What does this mean?We should fear and love God thatwe do not despise preaching andhis Word, but regard it as holy andgladly hear and learn it
STUDYING GOD’S WORD Why do we say that the thirdcommandment deals with Gods Word?
Leviticus 23:3 ”‘There are six days when you maywork, but the seventh day is a Sabbathof rest, a day of sacred assembly. You are not to do any work; wherever you live, it is a Sabbath to the LORD.
In the OT - God commanded that people rest and worship on Saturday. God was serious about his OT people obeying the Sabbath and not working on the 7th day. God commanded that those who did work were to be stoned to death. But note it wasnt just for rest, but it was also forstudying Gods Word. The Sabbath had two purposes.
Colossians 2:16-17 16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a NewMoon celebration or a Sabbath day. 17These are a shadow of the things thatwere to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.
The OT Sabbath was a shadow orpicture of Christ. If you see the shadow of a person coming around the corner, you look at the shadow until the personappears around the corner. Then youreyes look at the person rather than the shadow anymore. This is the OT. It was a shadow pointing to Christ and now we look at Jesus since he has appeared and fulfilled the OT. The Sabbath is no longer in effect.
Colossians 3:16Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as yousing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.
God commands us to study His Word.Lets say your mother goes off to the storeand tells you to watch for your aunt who iscoming. She specifically tells you to stand by the window and watch, and then when she does come to invite her in and keep her company until she returns. When your aunt comes, standing by the window no longer applies, but you still have to keep her company. So to the Sabbath nolonger applies, but we still study the Word. (keeping the spirit of the law)
We say that the third commandmentdeals with Gods Word because thats the part of the commandment that still applies to us.
GOD’S WORD IN MY LIFEEvaluate: Jon went fishing onSunday instead of going to church.Mary told him that he had committed asin by doing so.Agree or disagree and why? A trueChristian gladly hears and learnsGods word every day.
STUDYING GOD’S WORDHow does God want us to honor His Word?
Acts 17:11 Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for theyreceived the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.
God wants us to honor his word by gladly hearing it and reading it.Remember Jesus with Mary and Martha. Martha complained that Mary was at Jesus’ feet listening and not helping.Mary had chosen wisely. Jesus reminds us that he wants us to gladly read and hear his Word.
Psalm 119:72The law from your mouth is moreprecious to me than thousands of pieces of silver and gold.
God wants us to gladly learn His Word.If you just sit in class and daydream and look at the clock every five minutes andsort of listen, it is likely that you will gain very little from class. Just sitting in church, not participating, singing andreading along, will not likely benefit you. Only when you gladly hear and learn it will you really learn and grow.
John 20:31But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God,and that by believing you may have life in his name.
God wants us to honor his work by believing it. Suppose you purchase a book on campfire safety. You canmemorize everything about a fire pit, safe starting and extinguishing. But if youdont believe these things to be true, it will do no good when you go camping. You could hurt yourself if you dont do what the book says. Unfortunately, hearing and learning Gods Word will do nothing unless you believe it.
Luke 11:28He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”
God wants us to honor his word by obeying it. There are some forms of heart trouble that can be taken care of with medicine. The person may readthe label on the bottle and even believe the medicine will help. If he doesn’t follow the instructions to take the medicine at the right times, the medicine does him no good or may make him worse off. It’s the samespiritually. James says, "Faith by itself, without deeds is dead."
God wants me to honor his Word not justby hearing it, but also by gladly learning, believing and obeying it.
GOD’S WORD IN MY LIFEAgree or Disagree and why? Childrenshould not be forced to read the Bible andgo to church.Whats wrong here? Teri says she doesnthave to go to Bible class or read the Bible athome because she gets all the spiritualstrength she needs from the Sundayworship service.
STUDYING GOD’S WORDWhy does our church have regular Worship services?
Ephesians 4:11-13 11 It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that thebody of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
Our church has worship services so that Pastors can help up grow in faith - The word pastor means "shepherd.“ Shepherds take care of sheep and areresponsible for the health and well-beingof each sheep. God has placed a pastoras a shepherd over each of his flocks, orcongregations. They are responsible for the spiritual health and well-being of each and every person.
1 Peter 2:2 Like newborn babies, crave purespiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation,
We grow in faith as we hear the Word of God the pastor teaches us. One of thenumber one causes of death for children in the world is a lack of food andnourishment. If a child regularly refuses to eat the good food that their parent offers, they will become weak, sick and even die. If we fail to dine regularly onspiritual food that our pastor gives us by nourishing us with Gods Word, we will become weak, feeble and sick or even die spiritually.
Our congregation has worship servicesso that our pastor can feed us with Gods Word and help us to keep growing in faith. CHRISTIAN VOCABULARYSabbath - Hebrew word for "rest"Despise - to think of something asworthlessHoly - perfect, pure sinless - to be set apartfor use only with our holy God
STUDYING GODS WORDWhen do people sin against this commandment?
Hebrews 10:25 Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let usencourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
By refusing to hear and read Gods Word regularly. There are somepeople that go to church two times a year - Christmas and Easter - arethey Christians? Gods Word is the food that keeps people alive spiritually and needs to be heard regularly.
Hebrews 4:2 For we also have had the gospelpreached to us, just as they did; butthe message they heard was of no value to them, because those whoheard did not combine it with faith.
By not believing Gods Word. If you go through catechism class and know what Gods Word says, but after a year or two,you turn your back on Gods Word and say "I dont believe any more.” Think of what happened to Judas.
Luke 14:16-24 16 Jesus replied: “A certain man waspreparing a great banquet and invited manyguests. 17 At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had beeninvited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’ 18 “But they all alike began to makeexcuses. The first said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.’ 19 “Another said, ‘I have justbought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.’
Luke 14:16-24 20 “Still another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’21 “The servant cameback and reported this to his master. Thenthe owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.’ 22 ”‘Sir,’ the servant said, ‘what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.’
Luke 14:16-2423 “Then the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country lanes andmake them come in, so that my house willbe full. 24 I tell you, not one of those men who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.’”
By letting the pleasures and worries of this life to crowd out Gods Word andchurch. There are many activities thatone can do on a Sunday or in place of reading Gods Word - mow the lawn, soccer, sleep, skiing, fishing, hunting, baseball. When these things choke out Gods Word, then our faith weakens and can even die.
People sin against this commandment when they dont come to church tohear Gods Word or read it at home, believe Gods Word or obey it.
Ezekiel 33:11 - Say to them, As surely as the I live, declares the Lord, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, butrather that they turn from their evil ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways! Why do you die, O house of Israel?Give examples from your life of how youhave broken this commandment.Explain how when we turn from our evilways we have "life" ?
