  • 1. Smoking Drinking and Drug Use by Young People in England in 2009
    Smoking
  • 2. Proportion of young people who have never smoked
  • 3. Never smoked, by age
  • 4. Proportion of regular (weekly) smokers
  • 5. Regular smokers, by age
  • 6. Mean number of cigarettes smoked by regular smokers
£103 million: the estimated amount regular young smokers spent on cigarettes in 2009
  • 7. How did you reach that figure?
The mean number of cigarettes smoked by regular smokers in 2009 = 38.1
This equals 1976 cigarettes a year or 99 packs
The average price of a pack of cigarettes in 2009 = £5.80
    99 x 5.8 = £574.20
There are c. 3 million young people (11-15 in England); of which 6% are regular smokers = 180,000 regular smokers
    180,000 regular smokers x £624 = £103,356,000
