One of the major causes of STRESS; is the confusion andthe consequent division, strife and clashes; between thesuperstitions, “religious feelings” and “scientific temperor rationality”!It is true that blind beliefs or superstitions; are due todeficiency in rational thinking and are often harmful. The rationalists amongst us; seem to think thatsuperstitions are bad because they are irrational.Religious elements think that superstitions are part ofreligious faith and devotion; and hence should not becondemned. Even as; none of them; actually justifies thecriminals and victims of superstitions; the conflictcontinues. We have to appreciate that; it is not mere irrationalitythat makes the superstitions, harmful; it is irrationalitycombined with utter pettiness and brutality; that makesthem so much harmful as they are. We have to alsoappreciate that the rationality per se; is also harmfulwhen combined with pettiness and brutality!Even as it is commendable that many rationalists areworking against the irrational and brutal superstitions,
with noble purpose; they are missing the fact thatirrationality is only one aspect of harmful superstitions.Their solution of trying to insist rationality in everysphere of life; is therefore too inadequate to counter theviciousness integral to the harmful superstitions (and alsoevils within the rationality, which are left unattended to)!We all have to understand that; the human life isprofoundly rich by virtue of art, poetry, literature, instincts, feelings, aspirations, compassion, bravery, imaginations, intuitions, creativity, love, faith, devotion, dedication; which are often unexplainable by rationalityor logic; and not merely rationality. Most importantly;human life is uniquely rich by virtue of self knowledgeand enlightened wisdom embodying individual and globalblossoming; which is beyond the purview of (though notagainst) rationality. Even the roots of the desire of socialwelfare; that inspires the rationalists or their opponents;amongst us; has no logical or rational justifications orbasis! Thus, actions of a petty person are blind to the welfare ofothers; and whether fuelled by rationality, technology orignorance and superstition; they are always motivated by
petty selfishness and cruelty; and can lead to any criminaland antisocial activity.Crimes can originate from people held in high esteem as“well read”, “well informed”, “scientific”, “rational”,“intelligent” and “progressive” but always; pettyantihuman individuals. The war therefore has to be not merely against theirrationality in superstitions; as such but against anythingand everything; whether rational or irrational; that is anti“individual and global blossoming”!One more point we have to understand and that is; humanlife is like vast ocean. The unconscious, subconscious(and? super conscious) realms; are not still within thepurview of we rationality. The need of beliefs (rational orirrational) is actually integral to and as old as the historyof life.Biologically; the “beliefs” are seen in animals; in the formseveral responses e.g. parental behavior! The beliefs canbe instinctual, emotional and intellectual and lead to fixedpatterns of behavior; and we get STRESSED and restlessif we are abstained from a particular specific behavior.
Even as the horizons consciousness; broaden throughoverall evolution and progress; and the nature of beliefs isalso “evolved”; the beliefs per se; are integral to life. Thetheories such as “big bang” or “organic evolutionconceived by Charles Darwin” are intellectual “beliefs”termed “scientific”. They are based on the observations ofmany apparent aspects of nature; especially those; fromconception to death! They; like many scientific theories;cannot be verified! They are limited by the physiologicallimitations of the development of the human nervoussystem. Even the social theories based on observations ofthe apparent progress; are subjective and “beliefs”;fondly harbored by many; as scientific “truths”!Not merely, science and technology but even the so called“ultimate” “visions” and “revelations” in philosophy arefull of assumptions, beliefs and/or so called convictions!Beliefs of some kind or other; whether called blind beliefs, superstitions, faiths, convictions, theories or principles arecrutches; the mankind has been used to; and dependenton. This human frailty is biological, physiological andpsychological and hence need not be and should not be
condemned. Instead of harboring condescending attitude;we should realize the need of “crutches” for most of us;who can not live in outright uncertainty and without anykind of belief; conscious or subconscious! This is true;even if we are great scientists or profound philosophers.Living without any kind of beliefs is almost incompatiblewith life of sanity!Hence we must conquer not only the “superstitions”; andcrutches of all kinds; but all the malicious aspects of; theblind beliefs, superstitions, faiths, convictions, theories, principles and actions; whether “rational or irrational”,“theist or atheist” and “secular or religious”. Theimmortal saints have reiterated that this is possiblethrough study, analysis, synthesis, experimentation; andthe practice of NAMASMARAN. The self less and bravemotivation and dedication in this; is called SHRADDHA.
