    • About Dr. Steenblock
      • MS biochemistry, Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) degree
      • World class diagnostician (Worked as a pathologist)
      • Expert in diet, nutrition, herbal medicine, hyperbaric medicine, chelation-detox, the use of adult (nonembryonic) stem cells
      • Co-authored “ Umbilical Cord Stem Cell Therapy ”
      • Created the stem cell mobilizer Stemgevity™
      • Founder and President of Steenblock Research Institute, a nonprofit organization devoted to research and education.
    • Stem cells 101
    • Stem Cells
      • Your body ’s tissues harbor stem cells that help maintain, repair & regenerate them over a lifetime.
    • What are Stem Cells?
      • Unspecialized cells that can become various somatic or body cells, e.g., skin cells, liver cells, neurons, etc.
      • Found in high number in your bone marrow
    • Bone Marrow Stem Cells
      • Hematopoietic
      • Mesenchymal
      • Endothelial
    •
      • These are stem cells they give rise to blood cell types such as platelets, disease-fighting macrophages & a host of others. When they leave the marrow and engraft in other tissues they tend to become cells that support, heal & restore.
      • Injuries, infections & other damage in organs & tissues releases a chemical signal that summons stem cells from the bone marrow to repair these.
    • Stem Cells
      • The more stem cells released into a child ’s blood stream, the more healing occurs.
      • The healthier the child is, the healthier their stem cells are.
      • The more different types given at one time, e.g., hematopoietic, mesenchymal, epithelial, the better the results.
    • Bone Marrow
      • Children have at least 10 times more stem cells per milliliter (ml) of bone marrow than adults have.
    • Mesenchymal Stem Cells
      • Mesenchymals produce bone cells, fat cells, tendons, ligaments and muscle cells.
      • They also produce the extracellular matrix that supports the neurons and our other cells.
      • They have the inherent flexibility or plasticity to become other cells types.
    • Mesenchymal Stem Cells cont.
      • Have been shown to produce liver cells, pancreatic cells, heart cells, kidney cells and neuron-like cells.
      • When auto-immune issues are present they help suppress this.
    • Treating CP with stem cell-rich bone marrow
      • Both hematopoietic and mesenchymal stem cells are extracted from the bone marrow and are then immediately given back to the CP patient, most often by intravenous (iv) means.
    • Whole Bone Marrow Transplants
    • Bone Marrow Harvesting
    • Bone Marrow Harvesting
      • A local anesthetic is used to deaden the harvesting area.
      • Most of the time bone marrow is removed from the tibia are large bone in the lower leg.
      • Patients report feeling little if any pain or discomfort.
    • Two primary ways stem cell-rich bone marrow is given
      • By IV: The bone marrow is given intravenously.
      • Intrathecally: Also know as a lumbar puncture. The stem cell-rich marrow is injected into the spinal fluid where it circulates throughout the Central Nervous System including the brain.
    • Therapeutic measures that complement the whole bone marrow transplants
    • Umbilical Cord Blood Stem Cells
      • Umbilical cord blood contains many of the same kinds of stem cells as bone marrow.
      • In a 2004-5 pilot study which Dr. Steenblock spearheaded, eight (8) children with CP received pure cord blood stem cells by injection. All eight had improvements in mobility & cognition. Six showed statistically significant improvements in five areas of bodily function. The study appeared in Medical Hypotheses & Research journal.
    • Cord Blood Stem Cells cont.
      • At least five children with CP-related cortical blindness experienced a partial or complete resolution of this following a cord blood stem cell treatment.
      • Dr. Steenblock ’s namesake research institute, the nonprofit Steenblock Research Institute, has tracked 100s of children with CP and traumatic brain injury since 2003. 8 in 10 have experienced clinically significant improvements in 1 or more areas of function.
    • Cord Blood Stem Cells cont.
      • In some instances Dr. Steenblock may refer a child with CP to be treated with cord blood stem cells outside the US (It is illegal for doctors to use cord blood stem cells to treat CP in the US.) Usually this is because both bone marrow & cord blood stem cells are needed to achieve the greatest de gree of healing & restoration possible.
    • Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
      • When indicated Dr. Steenblock prescribes a course of HBOT. This is oxygen given under pressure in a HBO chamber. This treatment gets oxygen into parts of the body including the brain which reverses ischemia (blood flow is compromised) and hypoxia ( lack of oxygen).
    • Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy continued
      • HBOT constricts blood vessels and interrupts the vicious cycle where a lack of oxygen leads to tissue swelling, which then leads to further oxygen deficiency, etc. Also, in children the brain is still developing and it much more responsive to high levels of oxygen than is true of adults.

    • HBO and Stem Cells
      • Hyperbaric oxygen releases stem cells from the bone marrow into the circulation.
      • Hyperbaric oxygen treatments enhance the growth of the stem cells and their ability to migrate into damaged tissues.
      • HBOT is typically given daily before and after stem cell treatments.
    • Intravenous (IV) Treatments
      • In some instances Dr. Steenblock determines that certain growth factors, amino acids, vitamins, minerals or other compounds will help encourage rapid healing in a child either before or following a stem cell treatment. These are oftentimes given by IV drip as this gets them into the circulation and working right away.
      Customized IV cocktails
    • Pulsed Electromagnetic Treatment
      • When a child has inflammation and pain Dr. Steenblock may use a pulsed electromagnetic machine to remedy it. Clinical studies have shown this is great for stepping up the healing of soft-tissue wounds, as well as for suppressing inflammation.  Dr. Steenblock has found that PEMF and hyperbaric oxygen work synergistically to step up healing & restoration.
