NEW THEORIES AND STRATEGIES OF LEARNING, TEACHING AND RESEARCH FOR GREATER EFFICIENCY AND EFFECTIVENESS

 1. 1. MAKE LEARNING,TEACHING AND RESEARCH EASY AND EFFECTIVE : NEW MODELS, AND STRATEGIES DR. RAJU M. MATHEW & RANI RAJU
 2. 2. DOMINANCE OF ARISTOTLE

No school or University or the entire education system, even in the twenty first century, can go a step further from the theories, models and strategies that Aristotle had developed centuries ago.

No innovation has been taken place in Education, other than interpreting or reinterpreting what Aristotle had done, in spite of thousands of research works and wide application of Information Technology in Education.

Education is getting rigid, highly structured and even closed so that no reform or change can be made possible other than simply widow -dressing.

As a result, Education, from kindergarten to university level, spreading across the world, has become redundant and irrelevant to the children and youth living in the twenty first century characterized by Globalization, IT Revolution, Islamic Terrorism Global Economic Crisis, the Arab Spring, the Occupy Movement.

.

.

02/02/12 Make Learning, Teaching and Research Easy and Effective: New Models and Strategies. By Dr. Raju M. Mathew and Rani Raju
 3. 3. MASSIVE IGNORANCE, INEQUALITY AND OPPRESSION

Violent Global Revolutions have been fermenting in the hearts of the millions of the awakened youth and women all over the world who are getting aware that just 2% of the ‘chosen ones’ own and control 80% of the global resources, keeping 80% of the’ humanity’- the not chosen ones’- in poverty, ignorance and exploitation. Before the arrival of IT Revolutions, Globalization and Global Economic Crisis, nobody was aware of the gravity of the problem.

The basic task of Education has been shifted towards the ignorant masses so to make knowledge, including skills and expertise, accessible and usable to over 80% of the humanity who have been kept away from the fold of Education on the one hand and to make the existing learning, teaching and research easy, effective and highly productive so as to benefit the entire humanity.

02/02/12 Make Learning, Teaching and Research Easy and Effective: New Models and Strategies. By Dr. Raju M. Mathew and Rani Raju
 4. 4. KNOWLEDGE CONSUMPTION - PRODUCTION

An effective teacher, starting from elementary school to university level, must basically be an effective learner who alone can impart skills, methods and knowledge to the learners and thereby increase their learning effectiveness.

Learning, teaching, imparting skills and methods, and guiding research are the functions of the consumption and the production of knowledge , depending upon the level and context of the particular research or learning or teaching situation.

02/02/12 Make Learning, Teaching and Research Easy and Effective: New Models and Strategies. By Dr. Raju M. Mathew and Rani Raju
 5. 5. KNOWLEDGE- CENTRIC

Learning, teaching, skill acquisition, research, scientific productivity and developing expertise that together constitute the larger spectrum of educational process, are the embodiment of knowledge in diverse forms. They are the functions of either the consumption or the production of knowledge.

Though Data or Information can be considered as the applied forms of knowledge and data or information can be organized and made compatible to the existing knowledge base, they are not knowledge as such and far away from Knowledge as their structure and building blocs are no way similar or related. This is the basic problem of Information Technology in dealing with Education or Teaching or Learning

02/02/12 Make Learning, Teaching and Research Easy and Effective: New Models and Strategies. By Dr. Raju M. Mathew and Rani Raju
 6. 6. BUILDING BLOCS OF KNOWLEDGE

The structure of knowledge is non-linear and dynamic. The building blocs of knowledge are Concepts that have specific meaning, context and relevance. When the core concepts and their sub-categories are organized in a logical order from simple to complex besides on the basis of their relationships, they together constitute a Domain or Basic Subject, like Physics, Biotechnology, Economics and etc.

The structure of data is linear and static. The building blocs of Data are Bits that have no meaning or relevance or context. They cannot exist independently until and unless they are organized and made a part of the existing knowledge base. Data has no independent methodology.

02/02/12 Make Learning, Teaching and Research Easy and Effective: New Models and Strategies. By Dr. Raju M. Mathew and Rani Raju
 7. 7. COMMON STRUCTURE AND METHODS

All Domains of Knowledge, from pure sciences to applied sciences or social sciences to humanities have a common structure and method.

Understanding the structure and method of knowledge in a Domain is the most effective way of learning, teaching and research in that particular Domain of Knowledge .

Once the structure and method of knowledge in a Domain is made through, one can attain a mastery in any other Domain within as short span of time by using the same structure and method, provided, one should have the necessary caliber and aptitude. In this age of inter or multi-disciplinary study and research, such an understanding is the key to success.

02/02/12 Make Learning, Teaching and Research Easy and Effective: New Models and Strategies. By Dr. Raju M. Mathew and Rani Raju
 8. 8. TEACHING OF A DOMAIN AT DIFFERENT LEVELS

Any domain of knowledge can be taught before the learners with the help of five to ten core concepts and each core concept consists of five to ten sub-concepts, depending upon the nature of the Domain.

Identifying the core and sub-concepts and presenting them in a logical way by taking into account the level of understanding of the learner, with the support of examples, real life situations or parables or stories are the basis of effective teaching.

The scope and level of a concept to be taught or presented before the learner depends upon his or her level of caliber or understanding.

02/02/12 Make Learning, Teaching and Research Easy and Effective: New Models and Strategies. By Dr. Raju M. Mathew and Rani Raju
 9. 9. CONCEPTS FORMATION AND DEVELOPMENT

The most neglected aspect of teaching is ‘concepts’ – formation and development of concepts, that have been occurring quite accidently and not deliberately.

On the other hand, if concept formation and concept development are made deliberate and inbuilt system of teaching, that too by taking into account the level of the learners, teaching can be made more effective and less strain full and even highly interesting and rewarding

02/02/12 Make Learning, Teaching and Research Easy and Effective: New Models and Strategies. By Dr. Raju M. Mathew and Rani Raju
 10. 10. TRIAL AND ERROR

Teaching either at schools or universities, have been designed using the methodology of trial and error or drill and practice, though emphasis has been given for case study or doing by practice and finding out by research, even in the best educational institutions.

Undoubtedly, teaching has become tedious and cumbersome and demands a lot of home work from the part of teachers. As a result, even the sincere and hardworking teachers cannot be effective for over 70% of the learners.

02/02/12 Make Learning, Teaching and Research Easy and Effective: New Models and Strategies. By Dr. Raju M. Mathew and Rani Raju
 11. 11. GRADES AND LEVELS OF THE LEARNERS

Traditionally, the learners are put into different grades or classes at school such as kindergarten , elementary, high school etc and different programs at university, such as bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs.

A Learner within a grade or program, either at school or university, can be categorized as extra-ordinary, ordinary and sub-ordinary. Since the learners are in a flux, they may enter any of the other categories depending upon the learning situation and competency and motivation of the teachers or supervisors.

02/02/12 Make Learning, Teaching and Research Easy and Effective: New Models and Strategies. By Dr. Raju M. Mathew and Rani Raju
 12. 12. TEACHING FOR THE MEDIOCRE

All the existing teaching or learning programs, including course materials have been designed for ‘the ordinary learners’ or the mediocre, leaving both the extra-ordinary and the sub-ordinary learners.

As a result, even the best education system can be effective just for less than 30%, ignoring over 70% of the learners or students. It can further be found that just 5 to 10% of even the top scorers alone becomes experts or scientists or innovators, or decision-makers or the best professionals who can be categorized as high level ‘knowledge consumers and knowledge producers

02/02/12 Make Learning, Teaching and Research Easy and Effective: New Models and Strategies. By Dr. Raju M. Mathew and Rani Raju
 13. 13. THE TASKS OF TEACHING

The basic task of teaching is turning the mediocre or sub-ordinary into the ordinary level and the ordinary into the extra-ordinary. Every teacher must be equipped to present every concept at least at three levels of students consecutively in a session so that all categories of students are benefited simultaneously.

In other words, teaching is basically a process of augmenting the consumption of knowledge from low level to higher level and ultimately lead to higher level of knowledge production or research .

02/02/12 Make Learning, Teaching and Research Easy and Effective: New Models and Strategies. By Dr. Raju M. Mathew and Rani Raju
 14. 14. KNOWMATICS FOR EFFECTIVE TEACHING AND RESEARCH

The above discussion of increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of learning, teaching and research into several folds is based on the philosophy of Knowmatics and Mathew’s Theories of Knowledge Consumption- Production Growth that have already been discussed in the earlier presentations.

The greatest challenge of the humanity for its very survival is to ensure ‘Food, Dignity and Knowledge for All’, as they are the basis of empowering the entire mankind. If knowledge is made accessible and applicable or usable to the millions, that too at an affordable manner for each and every one, humanity can attain a ten fold sustainable peace and development within a very short span of time.

02/02/12 Make Learning, Teaching and Research Easy and Effective: New Models and Strategies. 15. 15. FURTHER STUDIES

A detailed discussion of the above problems and strategies and policies of education are dealt in the paper: Mathew, R. M. and Mathew, R. ‘ Knowmatics – A New Revolution in Higher Education’. Journal of the World Universities Forum, 4,1. 2011:1-11 and also the previous presentations posted in this site by Dr. Raju M. Mathew. A video presentation about the paper has been posted in YouTube.

A series of further studies have to be conducted globally on Knowmatics and Education for which a lot of fund and expertise must be set apart. Increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of learning, teaching and research must be given top most priorities by Governments, International Agencies, Educationists, Teachers and Learners.

02/02/12 Make Learning, Teaching and Research Easy and Effective: New Models and Strategies.
