  • 1. What Does Therapeutic Ultrasound Do?What is therapeutic ultrasound?Ultrasound is a type of treatment that provides deep heat to tissues. A special machine is used that sends out soundwaves at a high frequency. The sound waves generate heat as they go deep into your muscles and soft tissue. Thedeep heat causes changes in the injured tissue and helps it heal. When is ultrasound used?Ultrasound treatment is used for muscle, overuse, and soft tissue injuries. It is used on deep soft tissue, musclebruises, and to help break up scar tissue that may have built up due to an injury or surgery. Often it is used alongwith a physical therapy program of stretches and exercises. What happens during the ultrasound treatment?First, a conductive gel is applied to the skin. The ultrasound device is turned on to the correct setting. Thetherapist moves the transducer in slow even movements. This evenly spreads the deep heat and energy. Thetherapy normally lasts for 5 to 10 minutes. The patient doesnt feel anything during the treatment. What happens after the ultrasound treatment? You should stretch the muscle and soft tissue of the treated area. This takes advantage of the improved elasticity ofthe tissue. What are the benefits of ultrasound treatment?Benefits of ultrasound treatment include: • Increased blood flow to injured area • Increased tissue healing • Decreased pain in injured area • Decreased inflammation • Break up of scar tissueUltrasound treatment on injured soft tissue may lead to faster recovery, quicker return to activities, and less pain. For more informative health videos and articles like this one please visit us on the web atPremierHealthRehab.com or connect with us at Facebook.com/AtlantaChiropractorIn the Atlanta area you can reach us directly at (678) 223 - 3900
