    7. Data Protection Challenges FalconStor Network Storage Server (NSS)
    8. Data Protection Challenges
      • Not enough protection
        • Backing up data once a day does not provide enough coverage
        • Recovery Point Objective of 24 hours needs to be significantly reduced
      • Recovery takes too long
        • Restoring from tape is a lengthy process
        • Recovery Time Objective must shift from hours to minutes
        • Application downtime is unacceptable
    9. Data Protection Challenges
      • Disaster recovery is costly, limited, inefficient and risky
        • DR setups are extremely costly and difficult to test/verify
        • Tier 2 and Tier 3 data often unprotected
      • Data protection costs are out of control
        • Disk space, power and cooling needs are consuming IT budgets.
        • Data “consumers” continue to increase their demands and drive storage usage
        • Remote site protection costly and inefficient
    10. How does CDP work? FalconStor Network Storage Server (NSS)
    11. How Does CDP Work?
      • CDP copies data writes (not reads) to separate storage device
      • Maintains full mirrored copy plus journal and delta snapshots
1-10 Gig Ethernet 2-8 Gb FC or 1-10 Gb iSCSI SAN Storage CDP Storage Appliance 8:00 9:00 10:00 11:00 Host-based write-splitting for DAS, via iSCSI Fabric-based write splitting for Fibre Channel/iSCSI SANs Journal
    12. CDX Appliances, SANtap
      • Fabric-based mirroring, host-agnostic
      • All storage services performed out-of-band
      • If primary storage fails, CDP mirror provides seamless takeover of data processing
      • Write-data is mirrored, read-data is pass through
CDX devices Similar switch-based deployment with Cisco SANtap IP/FC Writes are mirrored Reads are pass-through 8:00 9:00 10:00 11:00 Bootable mirror disk Primary SAN storage Full QoS on mirror
    13. Simplify Server Protection FalconStor DiskSafe
      • For Windows: DiskSafe host-based mirroring software
        • Less than 5% CPU utilization
      • For Unix/Linux: volume managers supported
      • Manage protection from DiskSafe GUI on application server or from CDP console
IP/FC 8:00 9:00 10:00 11:00 Bootable mirror disks Writes are mirrored Full QoS on mirror
    14. Not Enough Protection CDP provides any point in time recovery Reduce corporate risk/exposure by capturing every transaction of high-value applications Change RPO from days to seconds
    15. How Much Protection Do You Need?
      • CDP has two modes
        • Continuous/Journaling: every write is captured allowing write-by-write recovery
        • Periodic: data is captured at intervals, (e.g. every 15 minutes, every hour, every four hours, etc.)
      • How often do you capture your data today?
        • Still backing up once a day? Most are.
      • How often would you like to protect your data?
        • Not everyone needs per-write data capture (but some do)
        • Do you need to increase your frequency of data protection?
    16. Continuous or Periodic Data Capture?
      • Continuous data capture is needed if every transaction on a volume is considered critical
        • If you have zero tolerance for lost transactions ($$$)
      • Periodic capture is good enough for most Recovery Point Objectives and much better than once a day backup
        • E.g. capture data once an hour and you have 24X more protection than once a day backup
    17. Continuous Data Capture plus Historical Views
      • Continuous data capture with multiple options for historical views
      • Combine full CDP with near-CDP snapshots
        • Up to 255 snapshots per volume
Full Journaling: 4 hours Hourly Snapshots: 24 Daily Snapshots: 7 Monthly Snapshots: 5 Example
      • Snapshots can be scheduled as well as created ad hoc with markers
      • Create readable/writeable view from any point in time
    18. Continuous Data Capture plus Historical Views
      • Easy to use interface for snapshot scheduling
      • Consistency groups to snap multiple application volumes simultaneously
      • Manage snapshots from the host-side or from the CDP device
    19. Recovery Takes Too Long Bring your business critical applications back on line quickly Instant recovery improves corporate revenue, productivity and customer satisfaction Change RTO from hours to minutes
    20. It’s More Than Just Recovering Data
      • You are not recovering “data,” you are recovering your business
      • Application downtime means
        • Lost opportunities
        • Lost transactions/sales
        • Failure to service customers
        • Diminished productivity as employees sit idle or have to re-create lost work
      • Tape restore is too slow and unreliable
    21. Moving from “Restore” to “Instant Recovery”
      • CDP changes “restore” into “instant recovery”
        • “ Restore” involves spooling data back to a target
      • Mountable/bootable images mean data can be instantly accessed to recover from any kind of failure
Rollback to any transaction Boot from drive images Recover data from multiple points in time C: Journal iSCSI or FC / D: D: D: 8:00 9:00 10:00 /home /home /home
    22. Application Aware Snapshots
      • Application agents and consistency groups provide 100% transactional integrity
        • The most extensive application, file system and OS support in the industry
      • Eliminate extended database or mail system consistency checks
MS Exchange Oracle MS SQL DB2 Informix SAP VMware Sybase Notes/Domino Progress Pervasive SQL Windows File System Linux File System 8:00 9:00 10:00 11:00 1:00 5:00 9:00 1:00 1:30 2:00 2:30 Each volume has its own snapshot schedule
    23. Lost or Corrupted Disk/File Recovery
      • Lost or corrupted file recovery in one minute
      • Select snapshot image prior to loss or corruption event
      • Mount image to server as new drive
      • Copy file or disk image
      1:00 1:30 2:00 D: Folder File1 File2 File3 X: Folder File1 File2 File3 Mount file system snapshot directly from client Recover individual files or roll-back entire volume
    24. Full System Physical-to-Virtual Recovery
      • Primary system lost due to hardware/software failure
      • Reboot from mirror drive using virtual machine technology
        • Does not require same physical server model
      • Application operational again within ten minutes
Boot directly into application using raw disk mapping System protected by CDP prior to failure FC or iSCSI 1:00 1:30 2:00
    25. Message and Mailbox Recovery for Exchange
      • Message Recovery for Exchanges uses a Wizard interface for fast mailbox/message recovery
      • The Wizard assigns snapshot disks to the Exchange server
      • Database is mounted under Recovery Storage Group
      • Mailboxes and/or messages are recovered
        • Copy back to original folder
        • Copy to alternate folder
      • Ten minute recovery from mailbox/message loss
    26. Disaster Recovery is Costly, Limited, Inefficient and Risky Any-to-any WAN optimized DR lowers costs, saves bandwidth Reduced cost structure allows you to extend protection to Tier 2/3 data Easy disaster recovery rehearsals to verify data integrity Accelerated backup to tape
    27. WAN Optimized Disaster Recovery
      • Easily configured any-to-any remote replication
      • Continuous or periodic modes
Full replicas Copy to tape DR Site … … Snapshots
      • WAN optimized out of the box
      • Includes WAN data encryption, compression and QoS
      Local protection optional
    28. WAN Optimized Data Replication
      • Applications and file systems write far more data to disk than actual changes
      • CDP scans the changes at a 512 byte level and replicates only the changed data
        • Avoids constant re-sending of duplicate data
512 byte = empty disk sector = data written by application or file system = sector with actual data change A typical 8k write of data. Many systems send all 8k or more. CDP sends only the truly changed sectors. 512 byte Disk sectors
    29. Real World Replication Savings Example
      • Legal Services firm benchmark, Nov-Jan 2006
      • 83 days worth of replicated data

    33. Disaster Recovery Failover/Failback
      • Individual or group-based failback
      • Policy-based and prioritized
Block-level data replication … … Normal Operations Replicas Point-in-time snapshots Failback after DR Restore from latest copy or from point-in-time in the event or rolling corruption Primary Site Recovery Site Rebuilding Primary Recovery Site
    34. Protect All your Data, Leave no Server Behind
      • Tier 2 and 3 data often unprotected because of costs
        • On average, 31% of enterprise IT budget spent on WAN costs
      • FalconStor WAN optimized replication lowers the largest cost of disaster recovery, allowing Tier 2 and Tier 3 data to be included
      • Any-to-any storage and protocol support further adds to savings
Tier 1 storage, Fibre Channel SAN Tier 2/3 storage, iSCSI SAN
    35. The Ongoing Problem of Physical Tape
      • Most enterprises are reducing tape, not eliminating it
        • Regulations/compliance drive physical tape demand for many organizations
      • The backup window remains the number one backup problem
      • FalconStor CDP can provide completely host-free backups at accelerated speeds
      • Integrates with FalconStor VTL for even faster, more reliable backups
    36. CDP Enables Fast, Host-free Backup
