2. INTRODUCTION
• Viral disease spread by mosquitoes
• First detected in 1952 in Africa at a place called
Makonde Plateau
• The name "CHIKUNGUNYA" is from the Makonde
language and its meaning is "THAT WHICH BENDS UP"
3. CAUSES
• Chikungunya virus, belongs to alpha-virus under Toga
virdae family
• Transmitted in humans by the bite of infected Aedes
aegypti mosquito & Aedes albopictus
• Bites during day time
• Needs only 2ml of water for breeding their eggs
7. SYMPTOMS
• Fever up to 40 °C (104 °F)
• Sometimes it is accompanied with rashes on limbs and
trunks
• Severe joint pain
• Redness in eye and difficulty in looking at light
8. DIAGNOSIS
• Clinical diagnosis by symptoms
• Differential diagnosis:
– Dengue fever
– Parvovirus infection
– Prodromal stages of Hepatitis B
– Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis
– Rubella
• Laboratory Diagnosis
– Mild leucopenia and relative lymphocytosis
– elevated ESR
– positive C - reactive protein
9. DIAGNOSIS
• SEROLOGY
– ELISA
– Detection of virus nucleic acid in serum by RT-PCR. blood test
10. TREATMENT
• No antiviral drug available till date
• Symptomatic treatment
• Rest
• More fluid diet
• Analgesics (NSAID)
• Phase II Vaccine on trial
12. PREVENTION
• Reducing mosquito breeding
– Avoid stagnant water around houses
– Use bleaching powder mixed in water if it is not tube used for
drinking
– Stock pools with fishes
