  5. 5. 8.00h-19.00 h Botanical excursion – Montseny biosphere reserve (We will go by bus from School of Pharmacy) (Dr. Josep Vicens, Dr. Angels Bonet and Dr. Francisco Pérez) A one-day field trip will be held to Montseny massif, located in the North of Catalan Prelittoral Range. The region comprises a surface of around 800 km2, and has a population of approximately 80,000. Montseny massif is a Natural Park, and from 1978 it is one of the Biosphere Reserves included in the network of UNESCO's program "Man and Biosphere”. Course programme Tuesday, July 19, 2011
  6. 6. BOTANICAL EXCURSION 8.00 h means at eight o’clock sharp Gaudi gate
  7. 8. Four main reasons led us to choose this place: 1) It is just 50 km far from Barcelona. 2) Irrespective of the proximity to a big urban area its flora is very rich (around 1,500 vascular plant species) and reasonably well kept. 3) In a relatively short altitudinal transect, from sea level to 1700 m, we can observe the most important European landscape, with communities representing Mediterranean, Euro-siberian and Boreo-Alpine vegetation. 4) The massif is very rich in useful, especially medicinal plants (more than 500 are known and used by people in this zone). Course programme Tuesday, July 19, 2011
  8. 9. 9.00-9.45 h Biodiversity and drug development (Dr. Salvador Cañigueral, Classroom B-111) 9.45-10.30 h Biodiversity and ethnomedicine ( visit to the Centre of Plant Biodiversity of our University ), Dr. Josep Vicens 10.30h- 11.00 h Coffee break (B-111) Course programme Wednesday, July 20, 2011
  9. 10. 11.00-12.00h Workshop of ethnobotany related to medicinal plants 12.00 h- 12.45 h Chemical diversity of hallucinogenic and toxic plants (Classroom B-111) 12.45 h-14.00 h Laboratory classes (Dr. Francisco Perez and Dr. Ester Risco, Lab B-305): 1. Foam index for saponin containg drugs 2. Detection of cyanogenetic heterosydes 3. Swelling index for mucilaginous drugs Course programme July 20, 2011
  10. 11. Visit to different companies (We will go by bus from School of Pharmacy) 9.30h- 12 h Visit to a company manufacturing products from medicinal plants: ELADIET www.eladiet.com Lunch at La Roca Village 15.00 - 17.00 h Visit to a company manufacturing flavours and fragances: LUCTA www.lucta.com Course programme Thursday, July 21, 2011

  13. 14. 11.00 h- 13.50 h Applications of plant biodiversity in cosmetics. Laboratory (Dr. Alfons del Pozo, Dr. Alfred Roig, Rosa Aparicio, Ana Viscasillas, Lab B-303). 13.50 h- 14.00 h Project evaluation Course programme July 22, 2011
  14. 15. - To know plant biodiversity and the interest to related with health care - To learn to organize practical activities for students to show chemical biodiversity of plants at a interspecific and infraspecific level - To learn the role of etnopharmacology in medicinal use of plant biodiversity. - To design interviews about medicinal plant use for practical work for high school students - To visit industries to show the economic role of plant biodiversity - To know Local plant biodiversity and its role in plant use Course programme Objectives
  15. 16. To identify the main medicinal and aromatic plants. To analise the roles of plant biodiversity in its geographical area in health care related to traditional and industrial uses. To face with scientific point of view information about aromatic and medicinal plants. To recognise the role of chemical diversity of plants in its aplications. To organize practical works to show the chemical diversity of plants. To organize field activities to study the relationship between plant biodiversity and traditional plant uses Course programme Results to be obtained
