    Notes on slide 1

Researchers have determined that TN pain originates from damage not only to the Trigeminal Nerve in the face but also from damage to the central Trigeminal system in the upper spinal cord and the ponto-medullary levels in the brainstem. Trauma to the head and neck that results in injury to nerve pathways in the spinal cord and brain stem has been shown in medical literature to be a possible cause of TN. Following the trauma, facial pain can be triggered immediately or can take months or years to develop.

    Ophthalmic, maxillary, mandibular branches.

Irritation from repeated pulsations may lead to changes of nerve function and delivery of abnormal signals to the trigeminal nerve nucleus. Over time this causes hyperactivity of the trigeminal nerve nucleus  pain.

Let’s talk about that Trigeminal Nucleus. What else goes on with this part of the brainstem besides input from the trigeminal nerve? Guess what else this part of the brainstem does?

Beside the trigeminal nerve, what goes in and controls this nucleus? Joints (Facets) Discs Ligaments

Hypothalamus controls your immune organs, blood vessels, muscles fibers. Do you or anyone you know with TN also have decreased immune system, high blood pressure, or tight muscles Hypothalamus controls Pituitary glands  hormones

This means that it controls the Temporalis muscles (tension headaches), Ptyergoid muscles (stiff neck), Tensor Veli Palatini (otitis media, Meniere’s Disease)

Sensory integration area all sensory input goes into thalamus and then it gets sorted out and sent up to the higher parts of the brain  cerebral cortex (brain fog)

UC chiropractic is a specific type of chiropractic where our main focus is on the upper neck and nervous system in that area.

Within all living things there is something which is infinite and perfect….

Procrastination is the thief of good health.

    3. QUICK FACTS
      • TN affects 1.7 million in US
      • About 5 in 100,000 will develop it this year
      • Average age of onset is b/n 50-70
      • Trigeminal nerve and brainstem connection.
      • Injury connection.

    6.
      • Recent study at Life University
      • 10 participants received upper cervical care over the course of eight weeks.
      • All the participants had major pain relief within the first four weeks and continued to improve gradually after that.
      • Study suggests that because of an upper neck misalignment has contributed to hyperactive state of the trigeminal nucleus.
