  • 1. Water heaters
  • 2.
    • The heating of water accounts for 15 per cent of a home owners energy use. Efficient water heaters use substantially less energy thus resulting in large savings for the home owner.
  • 3.
    • Energy savings from water heating systems depend on various factors from heater location, size of family and size and location of water pipes.
  • 4.
    • Water heater manufacturers keep many factors in mind while designing their products.
  • 5.
    • Electric water heaters of storage type are those in which water is kept hot at all times, ready for use, in insulated storage tanks.
  • 6.
    • Tank capacities may range from 20 to 80 gallons. The drawback of these water heaters is that energy is being used up constantly in order to keep the water hot resulting in ‘standby losses’.
  • 7.
    • The positive effect of this is that hot water is ready for use at the turn of a tap, without any delay.
  • 8.
    • Demand water heaters or ‘ instant’ water heaters as they called, in this day and age of ‘instant coffee ‘, on the other hand use less energy.
  • 9.
    • Water is circulated over a heated coil only on demand. The concept of a storage tank continuously heating water and spending energy is eliminated.
  • 10.
    • The downside to this technology is that there are only a fixed number of users that can avail of the hot water.
  • 11.
    • However, the quantity of hot water is endless, continuous and no ‘standby losses’ are incurred.
  • 12.
    • Solar water heaters are by far the most cost effective among heaters. Though the initial purchase price is high, the cost is leveraged in the long run.
  • 13.
    • Utilising the sun’s energy, it brings operating costs down by 90 percent.
  • 14.
    • Conventional water heaters or electric water heaters are installed as a backup for solar waters to ensure there is no lack of supply of hot water on cloudy days.
  • 15.
    • If home owners and families and water heater manufacturers heighten their environment consciousness and work steadily toward reducing their carbon footprint by switching to more energy efficient practices and products, it would ensure a cleaner, greener, safer world for future generations.
