  • Purpose of this paper is to educate and understand that there is always an alternative option in treating peoples illnesses alternative medication can be second option and go hand and hand with western medicine in psychologyIn order to understand alternative medications and their functions we must understand what mental illnesses are
  • The alternative medications can help guide psychology and western medicine in understanding mental illnesses ( explain) the good news about mental illness is that they are all treatable and recovery is a possibilityMost people diagnosed with a serious mental illness may experience relief from their symptoms by actively participating in an individual treatment program designed specifically for them. We as psychologist are prone to rely on western medication as one and only solution or cure ……I like to provide a second option in treating said illnesses
  • One alternative medicine I found was tcmTraditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is one of the world’s oldest medical systems, having a history of several thousands of yearsThe balance of yin and yang is reflected in many ways, but the mostfundamental is that of the relationships of qi, the vital force or energy which flows through a system of channels and conduits in the body, much like the earth’smagnetic field. Qi is responsible for activating and maintaining all of thephysiological functions of the body.Just as nature is organized by five primal forces – wood, fire, earth, metal and water– so, according to TCM philosophy, the body is divided into five functionalsystems: liver, heart, spleen, lung, kidney, known as ‘organ networks’. Thesenetworks govern particular tissues, mental faculties, and physical activities byregulating and preserving qi, blood and body fluid.
  • Forms of treatment in the traditional Chinese medicine;Acupuncture is based on the that qicourses through the body just as streams and rivers ebb and flow across the surface of the earth. Every organ network has a corresponding set of channels.Chinese herbs treat the underlying condition as defined by traditional diagnosis and rarely cause unwanted side-effects For instance, antibiotics eliminate bacteria but do not improve a person’s resistance to infection; diuretics remove excess fluid without improving kidney function. If a treatment is working, a person will notice calmed nerves, pain relief or a reduced heart rate.
  • Native American healing uses the spirit and the connection with the belief that everyone is cooperatively apart of something that is more powerful than everybody combined.Whenever a Native American begins a healing ceremony of any sort, they first begin with a prayer, which is an integral part in every aspect of their life. Each While a great deal has changed because of Christian influences and missionaries’ work over the past five hundred years, the strongest traditions are still alive.
  • There are branches of psychology which are also consider alternatives in our field for example… transpersonal psychologyTranspersonal psychologists work across disciplines and draw on insights from not only the various areas of psychology, but also the sciences of cognition, consciousness, and the paranormal; philosophy; social and cultural theory; integral health theories and practices; poetry, literature, and the arts; and, the world's spiritual and wisdom traditions Transpersonal is all about the person and its spirituality is about whats within that’s going to make a difference in the person life.
  • Although theirisnt enough information on paraypsychology is a subject that should be looked into more, in order to understand and investigate the unexplainable phenomenon's Parapsychology is ….Some people experience what are known as physical and mental phenomena, which are unexplained events that are controlled by unseen forces.A lot of the results are more vague and invalid due to their not being enough evidence in the field., is not a very reliable sources but makes us question our reality. Must be open minded it, one way to enforce the subject is by using it as a helpful source in psychology… in order to do so we must incorporate all components together ….
  • For centuries, hundreds upon thousands of people have been healed by alternative medicine, whether it is Chinese medicine or Native American Healing. For example….A comparison group of patients derived from the author's emergency room patients showed significantly lower rates of improvement. The author suggests that an intensive treatment experience (inspired by Native American Medicine practices) over 7-10 days for treating chronic physical illness achieves both health benefits and improved cost People that show symptoms of mental illness get misdiagnosed, are issue the proper medication that need but could possibly be suffering from a mental phenomenon ….Anneliese Michel is a prime example of a misdiagnosis, where she was mistaken for suffering from grand mal epilepsy when she believed that she suffered from possession. But gradually, Anneliese slipped further into the abyss. She would perform 600 genuflections a day, eventually rupturing her knee ligaments. She crawled under a table, barking like a dog for two days. She ate spiders, coal and bit the head off a dead bird. She even licked her own urine off the floor and could be heard through the walls screaming for hours
  • Due to the fact that there is very little information in the field of parapsychology, having these two fields work together could possibly help to form a clear answer to these ongoing phenomena.

  • 2. Why should we care?
People get misdiagnosed on a daily basis and there are many alternative ways in helping psychology to perhaps minimize these instances from occurring.
Transpersonal psychology and alternative medicines can be useful tools in aiding someone in their struggle with mental illness
  • 3. Mental illness
Mental illnesses are medical conditions that disrupt a person's thinking, feeling, mood, and ability to relate to others and daily functioning.
Mental illnesses can affect people of any age, race, religion
  • 4. Chinese medicine (tcm)
system of healing based upon the Chinese philosophy of the correspondence between nature and human beings
TCMs are based on the yin-yang and five elemental theories
  • 5. Tcm continue …
Acupuncture is one of the typical forms of therapy that treats an illness or provides anesthesia by inserting needles into specific parts of the human body
Herbal medicine is the practice of using herbs and herbal remedies; maintain health, prevent or cure diseases
  • 6. Native American Healing
physical illness can be treated by counseling and ceremony, since illness is viewed as simultaneously spiritual, mental, and physical.
The Native American healing rituals are comprised of hundreds of herbs, the use of fungi and lichens, and many other natural materials
  • 7. Transpersonal Psychology
Transpersonal psychology recognizes altered states of consciousness and transcendent experiences as a means to understand the human mind and treat psychological disorders.
The origins of transpersonal psychology lie in the fact that people acknowledged that there wasn’t a spiritual aspect in the field of psychology.
  • 8. Parapsychology
branch of psychology that deals with the investigation of psychic phenomena, clairvoyance, extrasensory perception, and telepathy.
mental phenomenon is anything that is related to the mind and the subconscious
  • 9. Integration of Alternative Medication
One hundred sixteen patients were treated in conjunction with traditional Native American healers, and more than 80% of patients showed benefits of a time-intensive treatment program.
Another form of misdiagnosis would be if someone were to show symptoms of a mental illness, and could possibly be suffering from what is in fact a mental phenomenon.
  • 10. conclusion
Instead of attempting to discredit each other, psychology and alternative medication can see greater results if they chose to work together in reducing the misdiagnoses.
