  • 2. ZOOM! Teeth Whitening (Part 2) What are the pros and cons? §  Every dental procedure comes with a list of pros and cons. Here are my thoughts concerning the pros and cons of the ZOOM! whitening process: §  Pros: The ZOOM! whitening gel is one of the strongest on the market and yields some of the best whitening results possible. It’s much more effective than any over the counter whitening system that is on the shelves of your local pharmacy or grocery store. Just one hour out of your day is all it takes for bright, white results.
  • 3. ZOOM! Teeth Whitening (Part 2) §  Cons: The actual results of teeth whitening are completely unpredictable. The whitening procedure does not always yield the results that the dentist predicts before the procedure. The teeth whitening procedure does not work effectively on all stains and discolorations. Teeth that have grey or brown tones do not respond to the whitening gel as well as teeth that have yellow tones. If whitening does not yield the results that you desire, you may have to consider porcelain veneers to mask your discoloration. Like all whitening products there are possible side effects that can occur during and after the whitening treatment. The most common side effect is teeth sensitivity. Since the whitening gel works on the inside layer of the teeth where the nerve is located, tooth sensitivity can occur. If it does occur, it usually will not last more than 24 hours. The second common side effect is irritation of the gums and other tissues surrounding the teeth. If the peroxide gel makes contact with the gums, the gum tissue can temporarily turn white (lasting only for about 1 hour). Your whitening specialist can prevent this by protecting your gums with barrier material. Despite these possible side effects, professional teeth whitening remains a safe procedure that can make a huge difference in your appearance.
  • 4. ZOOM! Teeth Whitening (Part 2) How much will it cost? §  ZOOM! whitening treatment will range depending on what region of the country you live and the experience of your dental provider. ZOOM! can range between $350 to $800 per procedure. Will insurance cover this procedure? §  Teeth whitening is considered a cosmetic procedure that is generally not covered by dental insurance. However, if your teeth have been affected by a medical circumstance such as taking certain antibiotics like tetracycline that stain your teeth, your dentist may be able to submit a letter with the history of your medical circumstance along with photos to attempt to get partial coverage
  • 5. ZOOM! Teeth Whitening (Part 2) How long will it last? §  Whitening your teeth is similar to dying your hair; over time the procedure needs to be touched up to keep it fresh. If regular maintenance isn’t performed, the whitening procedure will need to be redone sooner than necessary. ZOOM! in-office whitening results can last up to two years by visiting your dentist at least twice a year for a professional teeth cleaning to remove any stains, plaque or tartar that may have accumulated.
  • 6. ZOOM! Teeth Whitening (Part 2) §  If you follow a routine dental protocol at home of brushing with a soft or preferably a powerful electric toothbrush, use a baking soda formula toothpaste to act as an abrasive to minimize the stains, and monitor your consumption of foods and beverages that can stain your teeth, your teeth will remain white longer. Between ZOOM! whitening sessions, you can also maintain optimal whiteness by using take home whitening trays and gel that your dentist can provide or use the popular over the counter whitening strips and trays that are found in your local stores. §  A-List Advice: §  Use the opportunity of a ZOOM! whitening process to change the habits that led to your stained teeth in the first place. If you smoke, try to quit. If you drink a lot of coffee and tea, cut down and begin using a straw to decrease staining in the future.
