1. 1. HAITI MUST NOT BE FORGOTTEN Angels For Haiti Project Help Us Rebuild Haiti “One Family at a Time” Carolle Jean-Murat, MD Founder of Angels for Haiti Project www.HealthThroughCommunications.org www.AngelsForHaiti.org
 2. 2. HAITI MUST NOT BE FORGOTTEN Angels For Haiti Project

Born and raised in Haiti from a poor family,

Dr. Carolle learned that:

Education and opportunity are the key to a successful life.

Never forget where you came from.

To whom much is given, much is required and expected.

 3. 3. HAITI MUST NOT BE FORGOTTEN Angels For Haiti Project

A self-made woman, Dr. Carolle was educated in

the best universities of Mexico, Jamaica, and the

US. She settled in 1982 in San Diego, where she

was the first black woman, board-certified ob-gyn,

enjoyed a successful medical practice until 2005,

and received many accolades and awards for

community service.

 4. 5. HAITI MUST NOT BE FORGOTTEN Angels For Haiti Project

In the late 80’s when she saw the abject

condition her relatives were living in Haiti, she

asked her mother to supervise the building

of nine homes for them.

She always felt that it was important to have

“ a roof over your head, even though some

times you may have to go hungry…”

 5. 10. HAITI MUST NOT BE FORGOTTEN Angels For Haiti Project

She also made sure that her relatives

in Haiti would be well-cared throughout

the years, and that they would receive

a good education.

 6. 13. HAITI MUST NOT BE FORGOTTEN Angels For Haiti Project

In 1993, she founded the Health Through

Communications Foundation – a 501(c)3

non-profit organization whose goal is to

empower women and children globally.

At that time, the political situation and

instability would not let her help her own in

Haiti.

 7. 14. HAITI MUST NOT BE FORGOTTEN Angels For Haiti Project

In 1999, in spite of it all, Dr. Carolle decided

that it was time to help more people.

Her motto:

Vas ou tu veux, meurs ou tu dois.

Go where you have to, die where you must.

 8. 15. HAITI MUST NOT BE FORGOTTEN Angels For Haiti Project

Together with organizations such as CODEVA –

Coude-a-Coude Pour le Development Valleen;

CODEHA – Corde Enfant Haitien, founded by

Gody Boursiquot, in La Vallee de Jacmel; and

AHDH – Haitian Association for Human

Development, founded by Charles Rene, MD, -

Haitian born ob-gyn in New Orleans, and Vallean

Fraternity, in New York, she formed the Angels for

Haiti Project .

 9. 16. HAITI MUST NOT BE FORGOTTEN Angels For Haiti Project

Dr. Charles Rene with a medical team have been

going to La Vallee de Jacmel, in the southeastern

region of Haiti three times a year since 1984 to

provide free medical care at the St. Joseph

hospital, built from 1975 to 1980 by the members

of CODEVA with their own hands. The Vallean

Fraternity of New York provided the monetary

support.

 10. 20. Making Rounds Making Rounds
 11. 24. HAITI MUST NOT BE FORGOTTEN Angels For Haiti Project

Funds were raised to build a water tower for

the hospital. Over the years, the hospital,

the only one in the region, provided much

needed medical care and capacity to have

surgery.

 12. 26. HAITI MUST NOT BE FORGOTTEN Angels For Haiti Project

Dr. Carolle took the time to mingle with her people

because she believes that any program can be

successful only if it is the will of the people she is

trying to serve. They spoke of their needs such as

having scholarships for the laureates and destitute,

after school program such as art, music, cultural

programs, civism, hygiene; a trade school,

economic development, access to decent health

care, etc…

 13. 27. HAITI MUST NOT BE FORGOTTEN Angels For Haiti Project

Dr. Carolle believes that being healthy does not

only involve having good medical care and being

in good physical health.

Walking the talk and having a holistic approach to

health in her own medical practice in San Diego,

California as well, she listened to them and acted

accordingly.

 14. 35. HAITI MUST NOT BE FORGOTTEN Angels For Haiti Project

Each year, Dr. Carolle and the Angels for Haiti

make sure that hundred of children celebrate

Throughout Haiti the “International Children

Holiday for Peace.”

It is a day where they have the opportunity to

have all the food they can eat, as well as fresh

water (that they did not have to walk at least one

hour to fetch themselves), and refreshments, all

while they have lots of fun!

 15. 59. HAITI MUST NOT BE FORGOTTEN Angels For Haiti Project

Dr. Carolle does not hesitate to join

them in the fun as well!

 16. 65. HAITI MUST NOT BE FORGOTTEN Angels For Haiti Project

When the decision has to be made to use

precious luggage space between medical

supplies and “goodies, toys, & musical

instruments”, the latter always win.

 17. 68. HAITI MUST NOT BE FORGOTTEN Angels For Haiti Project

Haitian loves to play soccer. Angels For

Haiti fulfilled the wishes of the children of La

Vallee to have a full size soccer field and

have soccer tournaments during summer

vacations. The people of La Vallee de

Jacmel decided to name it after her:

Parc Dr. Carolle Jean-Murat

 18. 70. HAITI MUST NOT BE FORGOTTEN Angels For Haiti Project

Dr. Carolle not only advocated education, but felt

that, in a country with 90 percent unemployment,

Music and Art were not only good skills, but a way

out of poverty, as well.

Over the years, the teacher’s salary for the

schools, as well as for art, music, cultural and

other programs, were provided.

 24. 109. HAITI MUST NOT BE FORGOTTEN Angels For Haiti Project

Dr. Carolle believes that micro loans are the

key to help families gain economical

freedom.

She helped raise funds to build a branch of a

credit union – FONKOZE, helping Haitians’

poorest in Bizoton, where she was born.

All the

people whose lives she has touched are now living

under few tents, or tarps, at the mercy of the elements.

We are also dealing with refugees from Port-

au-Prince and Jacmel to La Vallee de Jacmel. The

average household went from 5 to 18 people.
