Information Technology, Globalization, and Legal Profession <ul><li>IT – accessibility, affordability and speed- digitized and transcends national boundaries </li></ul><ul><li>Globalization – money transfer and outsourcing </li></ul><ul><li>Legal profession / matters. </li></ul><ul><li>Lawyers in India charge $20 to $30 an hour compared to US rate $150 to $200 an hour. </li></ul><ul><li>A career with an LPO is attractive – LPO should see a boom in the next eight years; </li></ul><ul><li>A learning opportunity for those considering legal and paralegal careers in the West; </li></ul><ul><li>Tremendous variety of work at all levels of expertise; attractive remuneration and future management prospects; </li></ul><ul><li>An opportunity to work in a corporate structure that straddles borders; </li></ul><ul><li>High-end opportunities for talented law graduates </li></ul>
  4. 4. Legal Process Outsourcing (LPO) <ul><li>Legal outsourcing refers to the practice of a law firm obtaining legal support services from an outside law firm or legal support services company. When the outsourced entity is based in another country the practice is sometimes called Offshoring. </li></ul><ul><li>Legal Outsourcing mainly provides services such as document review, legal research and writing, drafting of pleadings and briefs and providing patent services. </li></ul><ul><li>In-house law departments of major multinational corporations outsource some of their work in order to save costs. </li></ul><ul><li>Danger of breach of clients confidentiality. </li></ul><ul><li>Ethical standards – the American Bar Association framework for ethical legal outsourcing. </li></ul>

Present Scenario <ul><li>Eight broad segments: Legal transcription, Document review, Litigation support, Legal research, Intellectual Property, Contract related services, Secretarial and Legal publishing services. </li></ul><ul><li>The explosion of opportunity set by US &quot;e-discovery laws,&quot; of 2006 </li></ul><ul><li>India has a large number of skilled lawyers at one-fifth the cost </li></ul><ul><li>90% of a lawyer's work can now be offshored to India, </li></ul><ul><li>Revenue: to grow from $146 million in 2006 to reach $640 million by end 2010. </li></ul><ul><li>Employment: 7,500 in 2006 - expected to reach 32,000 by end 2010. </li></ul><ul><li>100+ service providers in 3 groups: </li></ul><ul><li>a. Captive centers of corporate houses, </li></ul><ul><li>b. Third party service providers (Stand-alone LPOs) and </li></ul><ul><li>c. Third party - Multiservice providers. </li></ul><ul><li>Issues of Economic slowdown in the US, Confidentiality. </li></ul>

LPO industry and Legal Education System <ul><li>LPO revenue was estimated at $62 million for 2005 - grew to $124 million by the end of 2006, </li></ul><ul><li>Number of people employed within the LPO industry and the number of vendors has tripled within 18 months. </li></ul><ul><li>Revenue earned per full time employee $21,000. </li></ul><ul><li>NASSCOM estimates LPO market from the U.S. at $3 billion to $4 billion – only 3 to 4 per cent of the potential market has been tapped so far. </li></ul><ul><li>By 2010, target is to reach 6 to 7 per cent in the $250-billion global market of LPO. Over 200 top U.S. companies alone are looking to LPO for savings of up to 70% cost. </li></ul>
  7. 7. <ul><li>Over a million lawyers in India and the country’s law schools produce nearly 80,000 graduates p.a. </li></ul><ul><li>Hardly 5 per cent of them join the law firms and legal departments, or apprentice. </li></ul><ul><li>Skill sets : Proficiency in American English, drafting and research methodology, Computer proficiency. </li></ul><ul><li>1 out of every 900 gets job in MNC/LPO; requires a 3-hour written aptitude test. Profile -smart, enthusiastic, talented, and eager to learn. </li></ul><ul><li>India may lose out to Philippines, Malaysia and China - India will have to deliver high quality service </li></ul><ul><li>Training in the US legal system is necessary. The key thing would be ‘value add’ to the present system of LLB/Integrated programs. </li></ul><ul><li>No threat from China at the moment, but in 3-4 years to come it may pose threat so we will have to maintain our leadership position </li></ul>LPO industry and Legal Education System

A case for Assam and the Northeast <ul><li>Start with registering in some web based Freelancing. </li></ul><ul><li>With over 13 million people claiming the status of &quot; self employed &quot;, a number of Websites are available today </li></ul><ul><li>From helping you find work projects to offering advice, these sites can be a real asset to anyone striking out on their own. </li></ul><ul><li>Build your service site to start taking orders. </li></ul><ul><li>You need to accept credit cards / online payment ( eg, Paypal ) </li></ul><ul><li>Beginners need to fill out an online profile that specifies your experience, skill level, and sometimes allows you to list examples of your work. </li></ul>
