  • 6. The Trends in Vietnamese Tourism (1995-2007)
    • Abstract
    • In this paper, the main Vietnamese tourism figures covering the period between 1995-2007 are statistically analysed in an explanatory manner to provide a touristic profile of Vietnam, based on the number of tourists coming to Vietnam, the share of the countries over tourists visiting Vietnam and the means of transport for arrival to Vietnam. The analyses of trends are accompanied by social and economic explanations of the results in a way to allow a clarification of Vietnamese tourism trends that is almost impossible to reach by barely walking on the streets of Vietnamese touristic sites. The study concludes with a number of proposals.

  • 7. ASEAN Economic Cooperation and the (Re-)formation of (South East) Asian identity
    • Abstract
    • In this research paper, the effects of ASEAN economic cooperation over (re-)formation of a South East Asian identity in particular and Asian identity in general is investigated as ASEAN regional integration acts as a metonymy for Asian continental integration in general. The study provides a concise history of ASEAN coupled with the relationship between ASEAN and East Asian multilateral organizations. The study has a special focus on Asian Financial Crisis (AFC) (1997) as it is considered to be the common trauma in a social psychological sense that may contribute positively or negatively to the formation of the regional identity. The study will end up with a discussion of challenges to ASEAN and its future.
    • Keywords: ASEAN, South East Asia, Asian Financial Crisis.

  • 8. High-Profile Corruption vs. Low-Rank Corruption in Asia: A Clash of Ethics and Development?
    • Abstract:
    • Eurocentric theories of ethics consider corruption as endemic to Asian countries and endorse a version of cultural determinism whereby Asian governments and people are corrupted because of Asian values and/or norms. They propose, for instance, that bribery is an acceptable norm in Asian countries. In this study, we ascertain whether these claims are correct, or not, by comparative analysis through testing international indices such as the Corruption Index, along with general economic indices such GDP, Globalization Index, Human Development Index and poverty indices and income inequality indices such as Gini coefficient. This approach will be used to evaluate whether low-profile corruption in Asian countries could be attributed to poverty and income inequality prevalent in Asian countries. The study will also propose a new theory of corruption where the notions of ‘low and high intensity’ ethical dilemmas will be utilized to distinguish high-profile corruption by government officials as opposed to, and contrasted with, low-profile individuals with low income. The result of this analysis will be a fresh understanding of the particular ethical issues that are prevalent in disparate parts of society thereby facilitating a harbinger for policy consideration for both economic and social development.

  • 9. Education System and Labor Market in Vietnam: Economy and Education in Transition
    • Abstract:
    • Vietnam epitomizes a typical transition economy where unqualified labor is exported and qualified labor is imported. It is not due to the possibility that university graduates are relatively few, but they can not match the skills sought by the booming economy, as the pace of economic growth is far quicker than the pace of educational reform. In this study, Vietnam is presented as a typical economy in transition where education stands anachronistic by outdated curricula and not up-to-date teaching staff.
    • Along with formal education, economic growth displaces rural population whose labor skills are geared towards agriculture, i.e. not applicable to the current industrialization of Vietnam. Thus, adult education poses a second challenge for Vietnam in the area of economics and education.
    • A third relevant challenge is the computerization of education system and e-socialization of the economy as these foster the ties of Vietnam with the trends in globalization.
    • Thus, this study considers the problems of formal education, and vocational and adult education vis-à-vis unmatched demands of rapid economic growth of Vietnam; and e-socialization of Vietnam.
    • Keywords: Vietnam, economics and education, labor market, transition, vocational education, adult education, computerization, e-socialization.
