    Fly Fishing Chilean Patagonia The Fishing - Presentation Transcript

    1. IDAHO 12,325 kms
    2. Coyhaique Information  Coyhaique is located on the 45th Parallel South:  1,025 mi. South of Santiago  383 mi. South of Puerto Montt  214 mi. North of Cochrane  406 mi. North of Punta Arenas  1,392 mi. Southwest of Buenos Aires  Local Time – Eastern Standard Time;  Weather – Very similar to Portland, Oregon located on the 45th Parallel North (but 6 months later!)
    3. Coyhaique Information Elevation – 900 ft; Population – 55,000;  Airport – Coyhaique/Balmaceda (BBA); – 35 miles south of Coyhaique; Health Care – Coyhaique Regional Hospital; Restaurants - A Few Very Good Ones; Shopping - Many retail shops and markets; Internet Access - Yes. Coyhaique is a Very Safe and Clean City.
    4. Trout in Patagonia First trout were introduced in 1904; Brook trout, lake trout, landlocked salmon Roe came from United States Serious plantings were made in 1905; Browns and Rainbows Roe came from Germany Many farmed salmon entered the river systems during floods in 1994 - 5; Experimental steelhead programs are now underway in some areas.
    5. Very few trout have been planted in Chile since 1933 over 75 Years Ago!
    6. Each day, talk to your outfitter about your fishing preferences……..  Quantity or Quality (Numbers of fish or Size of fish – or Both)  Lakes and Lagunas, or Moving Waters?  Streams, Rivers, or Spring Creeks?  Walk, wade, or drift?  Dry flies, Nymphs, or Streamers? You will be given options, based on weather and fishing conditions… Pick One!

    39. Discuss with your guide….….  Clothing: • Layered clothing; Be ready for anything – especially wind and perhaps rain; • Breathable waders or wet wading are both options, depending on weather. (weather can vary 30 - 40 degrees in the same day)  Rods: • 6wt. rods work for everything; 4wt. is fine for some smaller waters; (You may want to take two rods on any given day – different weights, or same weight but rigged differently.)
    40.  Lines: • Have floating and fast sink-tip lines for all rods;  Leaders: • 7 and 9 ft – 2X, 3X and 4X;  Tippet: • Fresh 3X, 4X, and 5X; (Ensure that you bring plenty of leaders, tippet and floatant with you. While they are available locally, they are VERY expensive.)

    42.  Dry Fly Attractors – Stimulators, Sallys, Turks, Fat Alberts, Hoppers, Chernobyl Ants (Black & Anything – Sandwiches w / legs)  Other Dry Flies - Parachute Adams, Mayflies, Caddis, Madam X, Midges, PMDs, Emergers, etc.  Nymphs – Prince, Pheasant tail, Copper Johns, Stone Flies, etc.  Streamers – Wooly Buggers – Black, Olive, Brown, White (with and without beads), Bunnys, Zonkers, etc. • In general, the fish at not too picky. • Big is good! Rubber legs are good. • Idaho/Montana patterns work well.

    58.  For almost 60 years, I have been a serious fly fishing devotee, with considerable experience fishing waters in the western United States.  Through our many trips to Chile, my friends, family, and I have become enchanted with Chilean Patagonia and have made many friends there.
