  • 2. The consequences....
    • The consequences associated with our food can be split into four categories:
      • Environmental
      • Economic
      • Social
      • Political
    • Each of the sections have both positives and negatives
  • 3. Environmental consequences
    • Desertification
    • Overgrazing
    • Over cultivation
    • Depletion of groundwater stores
    • Monocultures/Loss of biodiversity
    • Fertiliser/pesticides
    • Global Warming
  • 4. Desertification Desertification is the process where productive land turns into desert. The processes of overcultivation, overgrazing and groundwater depletion are key

  • 8. Overcultivation
    • Crops are grown intensively(lots of crops in a small space)
    • The nutrients in the soil are absorbed by the plant and overtime become depleted
    • The soil then becomes damaged and useless
  • 9. Overgrazing
    • Animals eat all the grass in an area
    • The animals do not more on – so any new growth is eaten quickly
    • The grass dies including the roots and eventually the soil is eroded
  • 10. Monocultures
    • A monoculture is the same crop being grown in one field – this leads to a loss of biodiversity
    • Biodiversity is the number of plant and animal species living in 1 square kilometre
    • Pesticides and herbicides are used to killed off weeds and pests (insects) which would attack the monoculture and reduce the yield of the crop
    • Fertilisers are used to increase the yield of the crop

  • 13. Food Miles
    • A food mile is any mile that food has had to travel to get for the grower/producer to the supermarkets.
    • The further the distance the more food miles
    • Transportation releases CO2 which leads to global warming
  • 14.  
  • 15. Irrigation
    • In desert areas water is pumped onto the land from rivers and groundwater stores
    • The pipes from the river are fed into natural channels to improve the yield of the crop
  • 16. Salinisation
    • The water when pumped onto the surface of the field is left to become stagnant.
    • The water evaporates and leaves salt on the surface of the soil.
    • This poisons the plants and reduces the yield
  • 17. Political issues
    • This mainly arises from the hostilities associated with water
    • Mainly in areas of water stress – these are areas with little water – desert areas – Saharan Africa and the Middle East
    • Irrigation uses a lot of water – this reduces the amount of water in rivers and groundwater stores
    • People over than farmers have less water to drink and for business
    • The water would then need to be rationed
    • In areas where global warming is causing temperatures to rise more water will evaporate, there could be less rainfall and ultimately less water for people to use
    • There could potentially be wars in the future over the use of water in Egypt
  • 18. Social issues
    • Very useful especially in terms of LEDCs
    • LEDC tend to have a subsistence economy which means they only tend to grow enough just to feed themselves and their families
    • In Egypt they introduced cotton as a cash crop
    • A cash crop is one where LEDC can earn ‘cash’ very quickly
  • 19. Cash Crops
    • The LEDC then earns a lot of money from the crop
    • The problems:
      • Can lead to an over-reliance on the crop for money, if the price of the crop was to reduce then the country would earn less money
      • Can create monocultures
      • Lots of pesticides and herbicides are needed for the crop
      • Lots of irrigated water is needed for the crop to thrive
      • Salinisation can occur

    • The Green Revolution main aim was to produce more food in LEDCs
    • Richer countries give LEDCs more money, fertilisers, pesticides and High Yielding Crop Varieties (HYV)
