  • 1. Neuroscience Research Funding Contacts in the Federal Government 2010 An informal compendium of names and contact information for over 360 research grant and scientific review officers in 24 organizational units An electronic (PDF) version of the most recent update of this list is available on the Society for Neuroscience website at: http://www.sfn.org/nrfcontacts Volume 20a March 2010
  • 2. NIH Predoctoral Training Program in the Neurosciences Nine NIH Institutes are continuing joint sponsorship of a predoctoral institutional research training program in the neurosciences. The aim of this program is to encourage and support broad, early-stage training in the neurosciences by offering institutions a single, comprehensive training grant. This program supports the early years of graduate training, i.e. the first and second years, typically before full-time thesis research begins. Trainees are expected to be participants in a formal predoctoral curriculum offering broad and fundamental training in the neurosciences. We encourage a curriculum that spans the breadth of neurosciences in terms of the level of analysis (genes to molecules to cells to integrated, functional systems and behavior), approaches (including translational research), and the neuroscience of disease and disorders. We also encourage programs to incorporate formal education in experimental design and statistics. The training program would include core courses, laboratory rotations, and programmatic activities. It is expected that these institutional training programs will contribute to basic and disease-related neuroscience research that is relevant to the participating NIH Institutes. Foreign applications have a good chance of getting funded if either the expertise or resources are not available in the United States, for example, access to a unique study population.Reviewers will consider the relevance of the proposed research to the Institute’s mission and check whether similar work is being done by U.S. investigators and whether there is a need for the research. If similar research is being done, the application will suffer in review. Also, in order to receive NIH funding, your research should benefit the health of the American population, as well as your local population. http://grants.nih.gov/grants/foreign/special_guidance.htm

  • 13. Neuroscience Research Funding Contacts in the Federal Government October 2009 Page 11 of 15 Collaborative Research in Computational Neuroscience (CRCNS) Innovative Approaches to Science and Engineering Research on Brain Function http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2008/nsf08514/nsf08514.htm The most exciting and difficult challenge facing neuroscientists is to understand the functions of complex neurobiological systems. Computational neuroscience provides a theoretical foundation and set of technological approaches that may enhance our understanding of nervous system function by providing analytical and modeling tools that describe, traverse and integrate different levels of organization, spanning vast temporal and spatial scales and levels of abstraction. Computational approaches are needed in the study of neuroscience as the requirement for comprehensive analysis and interpretation of complex data sets becomes increasingly important. Collaborations among computer scientists, engineers, mathematicians, statisticians, theoreticians and experimental neuroscientists, are imperative to advance our understanding of the nervous system and mechanisms underlying brain disorders. The National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health plan to continue supporting innovative interdisciplinary research in computational neuroscience, responding to the need for research that focuses on integrating computational models and methods with neuroscience. This program is designed to encourage new collaborations at this interface. Full Proposal Deadlines (due by 5 p.m. proposer's local time): November 17, 2009 Research and Training Opportunities at the NIH The application for the 2010 summer program will open in mid-November, 2009 http://www.training.nih.gov/ NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) 4201 Wilson Boulevard Arlington, VA 22230 Radhakishan Baheti, Ph.D. Control, Networks & Comp Intelligence......(703) 292-8339 rbaheti@nsf.gov Mitra Basu, Ph.D. Computational Biology ...............................(703) 292-8980 mbasu@nsf.gov J. Neuroscience Research Funding Contacts in the Federal Government October 2009 Page 12 of 15 NIH Blueprint for Neuroscience Research The Blueprint is a framework to enhance cooperative activities among fifteen NIH Institutes and Centers that support research on the nervous system. By pooling resources and expertise, the Blueprint takes advantage of economies of scale, confronts challenges too large for any single Institute or Center, and develops research tools and infrastructure that serve the entire neuroscience community. "Best practices" developed at a single Institute or Center are implemented more widely; planning is coordinated at the early concept stage; resources established by one Institute or Center are opened to neuroscientists supported by others; and new working groups can focus on diseases and cross-cutting scientific issues. http://neuroscienceblueprint.nih.gov/ AIR FORCE OFFICE OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH (AFOSR) 875 North Randolph Street Arlington, VA 22203-1768 Directorate of Mathematics, Information and Life Science Hugh C. The video shows how outside experts assess applications and how review meetings are conducted to ensure fairness. The video also includes information on what applicants can do to improve the chances their applications will receive a positive review. To find out what has changed since the video was produced, download this three-page PDF file of new policies and changes that have been implemented since we released this video. • 18. DIVISION OF NEUROSCIENCE AND BASIC BEHAVIORAL SCIENCE The Division provides support for research programs in the areas of basic neuroscience, genetics, basic behavioral science, research training, resource development, technology development, drug discovery, and research dissemination. The Division has the responsibility, in cooperation with other components of the Institute and the research community, for ensuring that relevant basic science knowledge is generated and then harvested to create improved diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental and behavioral disorders. Through the various programs housed in its branches and offices, the Division offers support for a spectrum of relevant extramural activities. By reviewing the program descriptions, investigators should be able to identify an appropriate contact. For the Division and each program we also provide Areas of High Priority and Areas of Emphasis. In addition, we continue to encourage innovative applications in any area relevant to the mission of the Institute. Read the NIMH Strategic Objectives online at: http://www.nimh.nih.gov/about/strategic-planning-reports/index.shtml Areas of High Priority: Develop new and use existing physiological and computational models to understand the biological functions of genes, gene products, cells, and brain circuits in normal and abnormal mental function. Elucidate how cognitive, affect, stress, and motivational processes interact and their role(s) in mental disorders through functional studies spanning levels of analysis (genomic, molecular, cellular, circuits, behavior) during development and throughout the lifespan. Elucidate fundamental mechanisms (e.g., genetic, biological, behavioral, environmental) of complex social behavior. Identify in diverse populations from the US and around the world genetic variants, epigenetic mechanisms, and gene-environment interactions that influence vulnerability to mental disorders, endophenotypes, and pharmacologic response profiles. Identify biological markers (e.g., genetic, proteomic, imaging) in model systems and humans that could be further validated as methods for diagnosing and/or detecting risk/vulnerability, onset, progress, and/or severity of mental disorders. Identify and validate new molecular targets and tools for drug discovery relevant to the treatment of mental disorders.
