  • 5. FOUNDATION  William Collins (1789–1853) was a Scottish schoolmaster and publisher, founder of William Collins, Sons.  Collins was born near Glasgow in 1789. He was a millworker who established a company in 1819 for printing and publishing pamphlets, sermons, hymn books and prayer books. He produced the first Collins English Dictionary in 1824, when he also obtained a license to publish the Bible. In 1856, the first Collins atlas was published.
  • 6.  The first edition of the dictionary , with Patrick Hanks as editor and Lawrence Urdang as editorial director, was a milestone in British dictionary making as it was the first to use the full power of computer databases and typesetting in the preparation of a dictionary. This meant that, for instance, subject editors could control separate definitions of the same word and the results could be blended, rather than one editor being responsible for a word.  By the third edition, they increasingly used the Bank of English established by Hanks at COBUILD to provide typical definitions rather than examples composed by the lexicographer.
  • 7.  The current edition is the 11th edition, which was published in October 2011. A special "30th Anniversary" 10th edition was published in 2010, with earlier editions published once every 3 – 4 years.  CollinsDictionary.com. The unabridged Collins English dictionary was published on the web on 31 December 2011 on CollinsDictionary.com, along with the unabridged dictionaries of French, German, Spanish and Italian. The site also includes example sentences showing word usage from the Collins Bank of English Corpus, word frequencies and trends from the Google Engrams project, and word images from Flickr.
  • 8.  In August 2012, CollinsDictionary.com introduced Facebook-linked crowd-sourcing for neologisms, whilst still maintaining overall editorial control to remain distinct from Wiktionary and Urban Dictionary. This followed an earlier launch of a discussion forum for neologisms in 2004.

  • 10.  According to Nielsen (2008) a dictionary may be regarded as a lexicographical product that is characterized by three significant features: it has been prepared for one or more functions; it contains data that have been selected for the purpose of fulfilling those functions; and its lexicographic structures link and establish relationships between the data so that they can meet the needs of users and fulfill the functions of the dictionary
