Lambada with its roots in African dance and inspired by Salsa, Merengue and Zouk dances is an exotic, sensual dance in couples with fast movements and acrobatics. It arrived in Brazil in 1980's in the state of Belém. It was adopted by the natives of a fisherman's village called Porto Seguro in the South of Bahia State, northeast of Brazil, who introduced more swing and grace to the original technique. It started to expand through Europe and the rest of the world in 1985, when a French tourist visiting Porto Seguro discovered the art of Lambada. He promoted it through Europe with a TV commercial which showed Brazilian children dancing. It became quite famous with Kaoma Group. Lambada dance develops stamina, flexibility and strength of the spine for the drops. It is characterized by circular movements of the head, waving movements of shoulders, ribcage and hips. At its best, lambada is very fast, dynamic and energetic dance. It is considered to be a provocative dance of passion, in its own context remains so.
