Procrastination and Medical Profession Dr.T.V.Rao MD Procrastination, the habit of putting tasks off to thelast possible minute, can be a major problem in both ourcareer and our personal life. Consequences include missedopportunities, frenzied work hours, stress, overwhelm,resentment, and guilt. The procrastination among the Medicalprofessional have long term consequences. Nearly all of usprocrastinate at one time or another. At best, its a frustratinghabit. At worst, putting things off can ruin our dreams, andcan cause stress, anxiety, depression, health difficulties,accidents, and problems with your friends and family. And ifyou live or work with someone else who does it, it can beequally hard. The habit of procrastination exists in ourprofession and many at some are part of the neglect let’sadmit it. We continue to procrastinate, even Doctors.Scientists and Medical students tend to procrastinate in areasoutside of direct patient care, such as completing forms,writing medical legal reports and adopting innovations in theirprofessional practice. The completion of a long disabilityforms can consume more time than several patient visits.Medical legal reports generally take hours to days to write.Ironically, doctors can be so busy seeing patients that theygenerally don’t take the time to step back and make changesto improve efficiency and quality in their clinics. Often peoplemistake procrastination for “laziness”. They talk about it as ifit were some nasty character flaw. We hope that as you readthrough this series of modules, you will soon realise thatprocrastination has nothing to do with being lazy.Procrastination is……making a decision for no valid reason to

delay or not complete a task or goal you’ve committed too,and instead doing something of lesser importance, despitethere being negative consequences to not following throughon the original task or goal.
