  • 1. HOW TO BE HAPPY ? Dr.T.V.Rao MD What is happiness? It is a feeling of inner peace andsatisfaction. It is usually experienced when there are noworries, fears or obsessing thoughts. Many days in our life is arepetition of the past, however everyone is in search ofHappiness, and many of us fail to understand happiness, is itgetting married to our choice, acquiring more health. Everyoneone of us is struggling to live in search of happiness. Daily lifecan be made happier, it is a matter of choice, it is our attitudethat makes us feel happy or unhappy. It is true, we meet allkinds of situations during the day, and some of them may notbe conductive to happiness. If we let outer circumstancesinfluence our moods, we become their slaves. We lose ourfreedom. We let our happiness be determined by outer forces;on the other hand, we can free ourselves from outer influences. We can choose to be happy, and we can do a lot to addhappiness to our lives. From the moment of birth, there isyearning for happiness, and endless race towards it. It isconsidered as one of the greatest positive attributes. If weanalyse our actions, we see that all of them are in some way oranother, happiness oriented. Everyone wants to feel good andhappy. When circumstances and events are to our liking, weare happy, and when they are not, we feel miserable.Materialism is ruling the world influenced by the jealous,
  • 2. unhealthy competition, human suppression by cast, creed, religion and our surroundings. To be peaceful at mind, the firstforemost thing is to be satisfied with what you have at presentand try to make harmonious relations with the people allaround you. Once you are able to do that then you shall findthat you are better off and much peaceful. Just try toappreciate the positive aspects in your life and avoid ponderingover negatives in life and that shall make you more peaceful. Many studies and experiences proved that happiness cannot begenerated without cause and effect. So we have to endeavourto change the way we look at things. Always look at the brightside. The mind may drag you to think about negativity anddifficulties. Dont let it. Look at the good and positive side ofevery situation. All are not rich to get whatever we wishinstantaneously, we continuously struggle to get minimumcomforts. Look at what you have done, not at what you havenot been able to do. You may have accomplished a lot duringthe day, and yet you let yourself become frustrated, because ofsome small things that you did not accomplish. You have spentall day successfully carrying out many plans, and instead offeeling happy and satisfied, you look at what was notaccomplished and feel unhappy. Each day do something goodfor yourself. It can be something small, such buying a book, even a different newspaper, eating something you love, watching you favourite program on TV, going to a movie, or justhaving an evening walk. Just observe how aimlessly the peopleare living in the world, see a handicapped person struggling to

This can be a kind word, helping your colleagues.Associate with happy people, and try to learn from them to behappy, remember, happiness is contagious. When we analyseour life the moments of unhappiness is more than thehappiness. The great success of the age old Bhagavad Gita isphilosophy of detachment. Do your best to stay detached, when things do not proceed as intended and desired, asdetachment will help you stay calm and control your moodsand reactions. Detachment is not indifference. It is theacceptance of the good and the bad and staying balanced.Detachment has much to do with inner peace, and inner peaceis conductive to happiness. Many think we cannot be happy in aplace or environment, adaptability continues law of survival,Happiness is not something far away and unattainable, and itdoes not depend on circumstances, objects or events. It is aninseparable part of our consciousness, but hidden and coveredfrom sight, by our thoughts, desires and worries. Withadvancing years lowering income, with failing health, lack ofaffection, we certainly become unhappy in this materialisticworld, activities such as learning to concentrate and control themind. We have no ways except, developing will power and self-discipline, practicing meditation and reading spiritual literaturecan bring happiness, because they calm the mind. Withprogress of the Civilization we live for ourselves none, really to
  • 4. help us practising to live with self-Happiness is here, within us.Just calm our mind and stay relaxed, and we will experience it.You do not need to wait for it to come. You do not need outercircumstances and events to bring it. A calm and detached mindis the gate to true happiness. It is your decision to
