  3. 3. What is Docs4Lawyers? <ul><li>Docs4Lawyers is an electronic document management solution for law firms. It is free to download, quick to install and simple to use on a desktop computer, laptop or network server. </li></ul><ul><li>The solution is built on top of the leading open source ECM platform from Alfresco and delivers all the main document management functions: centralised storage, categorisation, check in/out, version control, security, auditing, full-text searching and more. </li></ul><ul><li>Docs4Lawyers is easy to use and integrates seamlessly with all desktop applications, including office and e-mail. In addition, it incorporates a specific adaptation for use by legal professionals, like commonly-used legal metadata fields, a client and matter management module and matter-centric favourite folders. </li></ul>

Document summary <ul><li>This document has been designed for non-technical users who would like to test the Docs4Lawyers solution in a simple and non-intrusive way. </li></ul><ul><li>The solution is delivered in a virtual image so all the necessary software is pre-configured. </li></ul><ul><li>After successfully launching the Docs4Lawyers server you can then connect to it through the network. </li></ul><ul><li>This guide goes through the process of downloading and launching the image and then doing some tests. It should only take a few minutes to get everything up and running (excluding download time). </li></ul><ul><li>Note: This document is not intended to be a fully comprehensive guide on how to set-up the software in a production environment. </li></ul>
  5. 5. System overview <ul><li>The software is pre-configured and ready to use in a self-contained virtualized environment. You do not need to install any Docs4Lawyers program files on your computer. </li></ul><ul><li>The virtual machine has the following components installed: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Ubuntu Operating System. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>MySQL Database. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Alfresco Document Management Engine. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Docs4Lawyers Solution. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>System Requirements: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Have approx 600 MB of free RAM in your PC. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Have approx 4 GB of free space on your hard disk. </li></ul></ul>

Install VMware player <ul><li>Go to VMware website and download the free player: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>http://www.vmware.com/download/eula/player_download.html </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Scroll to bottom to agree to the agreement. </li></ul><ul><li>Choose the download for your operating system: windows or linux. </li></ul><ul><li>Once the download has completed, install on the computer which will run the Docs4Lawyers image (can be a server or a PC). </li></ul><ul><li>The install wizard is simple and the only option you have is whether to install program shortcuts. </li></ul><ul><li>You will have to reboot the computer. </li></ul><ul><li>Note: if you are testing on a standalone PC (not on network, change the Docs4Lawyers image network settings to “Host Only” </li></ul>

Download the package <ul><li>Download the Docs4Lawyers package from Sourceforge: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>https://docs4lawyers.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/docs4lawyers </li></ul></ul><ul><li>The files are delivered in a zip file which is just over 1GB in size. </li></ul><ul><li>Depending on your PC configuration you will be asked to save or open the file. </li></ul><ul><li>Save the file to a folder on the PC. </li></ul>

Extract files and launch image <ul><li>First, extract image files from the download using winrar or winzip </li></ul><ul><li>Double click the “Docs4Lawyers.vmx” file. </li></ul><ul><li>During start-up it will ask you whether the image has been copied or moved. Choose “I copied it”. </li></ul>
  9. 9. Start-up screen <ul><li>When the message “INFO: Server startup in XXXXX ms” appears then the virtual machine is up and running. </li></ul><ul><li>Make a note of IP address. The 192.168.1.103 IP address shown below is an example from the installation performed when creating this documentation, and will be different with each installation. </li></ul>
  10. 10. Check the access points Web Client - DM <ul><li>In the web browser go to http://ipaddress:8080/docs4lawyers </li></ul><ul><li>username=admin, password=admin </li></ul><ul><li>This user interface is the classic document management web client. </li></ul>
