What is Docs4Lawyers?
Docs4Lawyers is an electronic document management solution for law firms. It is free to download, quick to install and simple to use on a desktop computer, laptop or network server.
The solution is built on top of the leading open source ECM platform from Alfresco and delivers all the main document management functions: centralised storage, categorisation, check in/out, version control, security, auditing, full-text searching and more.
Docs4Lawyers is easy to use and integrates seamlessly with all desktop applications, including office and e-mail. In addition, it incorporates a specific adaptation for use by legal professionals, like commonly-used legal metadata fields, a client and matter management module and matter-centric favourite folders.

Document summary
This document has been designed for non-technical users who would like to test the Docs4Lawyers solution in a simple and non-intrusive way.
The solution is delivered in a virtual image so all the necessary software is pre-configured.
After successfully launching the Docs4Lawyers server you can then connect to it through the network.
This guide goes through the process of downloading and launching the image and then doing some tests. It should only take a few minutes to get everything up and running (excluding download time).
Note: This document is not intended to be a fully comprehensive guide on how to set-up the software in a production environment.

System overview
The software is pre-configured and ready to use in a self-contained virtualized environment. You do not need to install any Docs4Lawyers program files on your computer.
The virtual machine has the following components installed:
Ubuntu Operating System.
MySQL Database.
Alfresco Document Management Engine.
Docs4Lawyers Solution.
System Requirements:
Have approx 600 MB of free RAM in your PC.
Have approx 4 GB of free space on your hard disk.

Install VMware player
Go to VMware website and download the free player:
http://www.vmware.com/download/eula/player_download.html
Scroll to bottom to agree to the agreement.
Choose the download for your operating system: windows or linux.
Once the download has completed, install on the computer which will run the Docs4Lawyers image (can be a server or a PC).
The install wizard is simple and the only option you have is whether to install program shortcuts.
You will have to reboot the computer.
Note: if you are testing on a standalone PC (not on network, change the Docs4Lawyers image network settings to “Host Only”

Download the package
Download the Docs4Lawyers package from Sourceforge:
https://docs4lawyers.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/docs4lawyers
The files are delivered in a zip file which is just over 1GB in size.
Depending on your PC configuration you will be asked to save or open the file.
Save the file to a folder on the PC.

Extract files and launch image
First, extract image files from the download using winrar or winzip
Double click the “Docs4Lawyers.vmx” file.
During start-up it will ask you whether the image has been copied or moved. Choose “I copied it”.

When the message “INFO: Server startup in XXXXX ms” appears then the virtual machine is up and running.
Make a note of IP address. The 192.168.1.103 IP address shown below is an example from the installation performed when creating this documentation, and will be different with each installation.

Check the access points Web Client - DM
In the web browser go to http://ipaddress:8080/docs4lawyers
username=admin, password=admin
This user interface is the classic document management web client.

In the web browser go to http://ipaddress:8080/share
The Collaboration user interface (Share) has basic document management and useful collaboration features

Map a network drive (e.g. Z:) tp paddressdocs4lawyers
CIFS makes the repository appear like a normal network file system

Add a network place to http://ipaddress:8080/docs4lawyers/webdav
WebDav is similar to CIFS and can be used outside when outside the local network.

Add a network place to http://ipaddress:7070/docs4lawyers
SharePoint Protocol is similar to WebDav, and provides tight integration to Microsoft Office
