    Exploring the
    different methods
    of Tattoo Removal
    and the chemical
    reactions involved.
  • Lasers
    Argon Laser:
    First reported use as a method
    of tattoo occurred in 1979.
    Works by absorbing energy
    with vaporization from its 488-nm and 514-nm
    wavelengths.
    Ultimately very inefficient at removing tattoos because of its low-power emission and its incredibly large chance of hypertonic scarring.
    Carbon Dioxide Laser:
    • First reported use as a method of tattoo removal
    occurred in 1978.
    • Original objective of carbon dioxide treatment was
    to vaporize tissue by using visual control to
    remove all tattoo pigment in 1 treatment session
    • As with any form of tattoo removal, there are
    great risks to laser treatments.
  • Lasers – How it Works
    • Laser tattoo removal works by emitting wavelengths for 15-40 nanoseconds which breaks through the epidermis and absorbs the ink from the tattoo. View slide
    • Different color inks are removed by different types of lasers which are applied for different periods of time. View slide
    • To prevent damage to the skin,
    the lasers are emitted in a
    pulsing manner.
    • The laser and the ink
    combining causes an
    endothermic reaction which
    causes the ink to “shatter”
    and release it into your body.
    From there, your immune
    system disposes of it.
  • Lasers vs. Inks
  • Hydroquinone-used for many years. There are some suggestions that the long termuse of this compound can be carcinogenic and its availability is being restricted.
    Kojic Acid-a by-product of manufacturing sake, a Japanese rice wine. It is used as a naturalalternative to hydroquinone, but has been shown to irritate some people’s skin and be a'possible' carcinogen.
    Alpha-Arbutin-an advanced, highly effective naturally derived synthetic lighteningcompound, suitable for most skin types.
    Arbutin or Beta Arbutin-also known as ‘Bearberry Extract’ and isup to 10 times less effective than Alpha Arbutin. Arbutin / Beta Arbutin is a cheap extract tomanufacture and has been shown to irritate some people’s skin. This ingredient is VERY common in lots of cosmetic brands that are pure skin fade or skin bleaching products.
    Parabens are chemical preservatives, including butylparaben, propylparaben, methylparaben,and ethylparaben. These are also used in cosmetics.
    Mercury-a basic chemical element. In cosmetics, it was used as a preservative and a skinwhitener. Mercury is highly toxic to humans and can cause cancer and many other problems. It is strongly advised that you completely avoid any cosmetic product containing mercury.
    Other Methods
  • Side effects/Neurological effects of Hydroquinone
    Headache, tinnitus, dizziness, delirium, muscle twitching, tremor/convulsions, nausea, vomiting and production of brown/green urine.
    Itching, blistering, swelling, a gradual blue-black darkening of the skin.
    Irritation and corrosion to the skin, eyes and mucous membranes may occur.
    Based products have also caused disfigurement and permanent scarring to thousands of faces around the world
