      • Sept. 16, 2001 -- Bush promises crusade to "rid the world of evildoers.”
      • Sept. 18, 2001 -- United Nations Security Council calls on the Taliban leaders in Afghanistan to turn over bin Laden, who has been operating from within that country.
      • They refuse.
    4. War in Afghanistan
      • Oct. 7, 2001 -- The United States launches attack on al Qaeda camps and Taliban installations in Afghanistan.
      • Resistance crumbles in a matter of weeks
      • Occupation continues
    5. Bin Laden Escapes
      • US Special forces are sent into the Tora Bora Mtns. To find Bin Laden but fail.
    6. Iraq is Targeted
      • March 16, 2003 -- Bush declares, "The dictator of Iraq and his weapons of mass destruction are a threat to the security of free nations.''
    7. Bush Admin vs. Saddam
      • Admin accuses Iraq of harboring Terrorist and developing / possessing Weapons of Mass destruction (WMD)
      • UN inspectors enter Iraq and find no evidence but US intelligence reports say otherwise.
    8. Operation Iraqi Freedom
      • March 20, 2003 -- The United States, acting without the approval it sought from the United Nations, invades Iraq.
      • Bush says the destruction of the regime of President Saddam Hussein is "a vital part" of the war on terrorism.
    9. Iraqi Freedom
      • April 9, 2003 -- The fall of Baghdad. U.S. Marines enter city and tear down statue of Hussein.
      • Many Iraqis rejoice with liberation
      • Problem : No WMD were found.

      • Establish a democracy
      • Establish a strong government that can stand on its own so US can get out.

      • Iraqi Society is fragmented into two distinct groups:
      • Sunni: Majority - orthodox
      • Shi’a: Second largest population in Iraq.
      • Differences in Islam
      • After Mohammed’s death, how Islam should be practiced. (2 views)
      • Saddam was a MAJOR control factor for these groups

      • Sectarian rivalries (religious)
      • Foreign Fighters ( Al Qeada)
      • Iraqi insurgents (Guerillas)
      • Unstable government
      • US troops caught in the middle
    13. Saddam is Found
      • Dec. 13, 2003 -- Hussein is captured by U.S. soldiers, having been found hiding in a hole in the ground at a farmhouse near the city of Tikrit.
      • He was tried by an Iraqi court and found guilty of crimes against humanity.
      • He is hung to death by the Iraqi Gov’t.
    14. Al Qaeda hits Western Europe: Madrid, Spain
      • March 11, 2004 -- Al Qaeda-linked terrorists explode 10 bombs that rip through commuter trains at three Madrid stations, killing nearly 200 people and wounding 1,400.
    15. Al Qaeda hits London
      • July 7, 2005 -- Bombs planted on a bus and the subway in London kill 52 people. British-born Pakistanis are arrested and charged.
    16. Problems on the Home front
      • Some Anti war Protest
      • Rising Oil cost
      • Slumping Economy
      • Congress has been pressing Bush admin. to set a pullout date & is currently trying to cut funding for the war.
      • Presidential Election in Nov. may change everything.
    17. Human Cost
      • After five years, the war in Iraq continues. It has claimed the lives of more than 4,000 U.S. troops, 24,000 wounded and 33,000 to 37,000 Iraqis killed.
    18. Lasting Impact
      • US still in Afghanistan and Iraq
      • Insurgency is still strong
      • Osama still out there
      • Al Qaeda is still fighting
