Unit Two: Construction Tools, Tool Use and Tool Safety
Introduction to Hand Tools:
Cutting Tools &
Smoothing, Planning and Shaping Tools
Cutting Tools:Hand Saw
A hand saw is a tool designed to cut straight lines in dimensioned lumber. There are 2 different models of this tool; a cross cut saw (designed to cut across the grain direction) and a rip saw (designed to cut along the grain direction).
Cutting Tools:Back Saw
A backsaw is any handsaw which has a stiffening rib on the edge opposite the cutting edge, allowing for better control and more precise cutting than with other types of saws.
Cutting Tools:Hack saw
A hacksaw is a fine-tooth saw with a blade under tension in a frame, used for cutting materials such as metal.
Cutting Tools:Drywall Saw
A drywall saw is a course tooth, pointed handsaw used to make holes or cut-outs in drywall.
Cutting Tools:Tin Snips
Snips, also known as shears, are hand tools used to cut sheet metal.
Cutting Tools:Compound Snips
Compound-action tin snips (also known as aviation snips) are designed to cut curved lines in sheet metal.
Cutting Tools:Utility Knife
A utility knife is a cutting tool with a short, very sharp replaceable blade, used in a wide variety of situations.
Planning, Smoothing and Shaping Tools:Hand Planes
A hand planeis a woodworking tool for shaping wood and creating a smooth surface on a rough piece of lumber.
Planning, Smoothing and Shaping Tools:Rasp and File
Rasps and Files are used for shaping wood. Rasps generally cut more coarsely than files but both tools can be used to alter the surface of a board.
Planning, Smoothing and Shaping Tools:Chisel
A chisel is a cutting tool with a sharp cutting edge on the blade. They come in a wide variety of sizes and shapes. The driving force may be applied by hand or applied using a mallet or hammer.
