    42. Gulf Coast casinos get luck back after storm…Gambling businesses thriving nearly alone two years after Katrina By Alan Sayre-The Associated Press posted on Sun, Oct 14, 2007
      • The casinos are in line to better 2004, their best year ever, when gamblers left behind 1.23 Billion dollars
      • Larry Gregory, executive director of the Mississippi Gaming Commission, said the split between gambling and non-gambling revenue for coastal casinos is about 65 percent-35 percent - and headed more toward the non-gambling side.
      • The average home price of $168,000.00 "fails to meet the demand for affordable work force housing."
      • Katrina severely damaged or destroyed 90,000 homes in Hancock, Harrison and Jackson Counties, including at least 20,000 rental units.
    43. October 30, 2007,  Mayor:  A.J. Holloway, City Council;   George Lawrence,   William "Bill" Stallworth,   Charles T. Harrison Jr.,   Mike Fitzpatrick,   Tom Wall,   Edward "Ed" Gemmill,   David Fayard Biloxi approaching billion-dollar mark in construction Biloxi will soon pass the billion-dollar mark in post-Katrina construction permits, Mayor A.J. Holloway has announced. The city issued more than $977 million in construction permits in the 26 months after Hurricane Katrina, with more than half of those permits issued for non-casino and non-condo construction. "The number is expected to continue to increase, and increase dramatically,"Holloway said today, noting that only a fraction of the multi-million-dollar Margaritaville project has received permits at this point. Keep in mind we lost 6,000 homes and businesses as a result of the storm," the mayor said, "so we have a ways to go. But we're getting there. Everyone knows the issues – the cost of insurance, if you can get insurance, the cost of construction, and the new flood elevations." The mayor pointed out that Keesler is in the midst of the largest military housing construction project in the history of the Air Force, which will see 1,067 new housing units built, and the Biloxi Housing Authority continues to make progress on restoration of its Hope VI project and plans for more than 1,000 additional housing units in Biloxi. More online: Mayor Holloway touched on the myriad issues and progress of the rebuilding process during a recent speech to the Gulfport Business Club. News and notes: Planning Commission: The Biloxi Planning Commission meets Thursday at 1 p.m. Ohr launch: The Ohr-O'Keefe Museum of Art on Monday unveiled a new web site, which carries news of the museum's plans to resume construction at its east Biloxi beachfront site on Dec. 1. Halloween contest: Several Mississippi Gulf Coast cities will be competing for a $30,000 Jeep Wednesday night in the Gulf Coast Mayors Halloween Contest at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Biloxi. The Gulf Coast Mayors Halloween Costume Contest takes place at 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hard Rock Live. Doors open at 8 p.m. for the event, with locals encouraged to support their cities. City Historical Administrator Bill Raymond will be representing Biloxi in the contests. Bridge update: The Postal Service this afternoon should begin delivering information about Thursday's opening of the Biloxi Bay Bridge. More than 24,000 newsletters are being distributed to all residents and businesses in Biloxi. Released by Vincent Creel, Public Affairs Manager, City of Biloxi Biloxi's Community Development Department has issued nearly 20,000 permits of one type or another since Katrina. Of the $977 million value in permits, more than $532 million is non-casino and non-condo construction. Holloway noted, however, that only $49.7 million in permits have been issued for new homes, which translates into 331 new homes permitted since Katrina .

    45. Stennis Space Center impact totals $488 million
      • STENNIS SPACE CENTER, Miss. – NASA’s Stennis Space Center in 2006 had a direct impact of $488 million within a 50-mile radius, according to results of a study released Wednesday. The study was done by Mississippi State University economics professor Dr. Charles Campbell. While post-Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts continue, the study noted SSC maintained a stable direct impact on the global economy for two consecutive years, totaling $691 million. SSC is home to NASA and more than 30 other resident agencies. NASA and its contractors employ 1,973. The largest agency on-site is the Department of Defense with 1,885 employees, including the Navy, Army and contractors. Other resident agencies employ an additional 693, bringing the total SSC workforce to 4,551. The impact study was announced during a news conference in Jackson.

    46. Mississippi’s Gulf Coast employment Market
    47. Unemployment Rates
      • Comparable figures for Mississippi were 7.3 and 7.1 percent. Non-farm employment totals, which count jobs not people. Showed a net loss of 4,900 jobs from May. This was due largely to a seasonal drop of 4,100 employees in local public education, coinciding with the end of the school year.
      • Labor force movements in local areas around the state pretty much followed the statewide trend with urban areas generally faring better than rural counties since they offered more job opportunities for the youthful jobseekers. Noxubee County posted the highest rate of unemployment at 15.5 percent; on the other end of the scale, Desoto County registered the lowest rate at 4.6 percent. If past trends hold true, July may bring some relief from rising joblessness as unsuccessful student job seekers abandon their search and exit the labor force.
      • ALONG THE MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST, housing shortage continues to be the major factor in unemployment. Businesses continue to suffer from lack of employees while the unemployment rate – dropping each month since September 05, continues well above the state average because workers find it difficult to find housing.
