  • This is NOT a new problem !! The online collaboration & knowledge sharing problem has been around for 15+ years. Old tools and methodologies haven’t worked!! Email is still the #1 corporate collaboration & knowledge sharing tool 35+ billion corporate emails and growing IT management nightmare – back up & storage People still cannot find information, expertise and knowledge in their company Leakages, silos, knowledge management. Not conducive to facilitation. Email perpetuates information silos. Disassociates knowledge and data – you actually have content and email that are parallel but they get separated when they are stored. Losing knowledge/wisdom when collateral is stored. Social networking tools – allow you to collaborate instantly. Turns data into information, integrates data/information and preserves it. Use it, leverage and create something more. What I find interesting is that many executives don’t realize that social networking is not a new concept in the business world. Business users have been networking for decades... long before anyone had ever heard of Facebook. From the daily telephone conversations we have with our customers to conference room meetings with potential partners or the water cooler conversations with other employees. These are all early forms of social networking and are still being used today. But the #1 corporate social networking tool by far is email. With over 90 billion emails sent daily... it is clearly the #1 corporate social networking tool on the planet.

Having all of the technologies in place to support the social dimensions that performance management requires. But… most difficult of all is trying to manage a successful company without the right tools, the right people and the right culture. Many organizations today… still struggle with isolated knowledge workers, limited understanding of organizational expertise and a lack of accepted best practices. Information barriers hamper productivity, decrease employee awareness and cripple the pace of innovation by duplicating efforts. This is where I see online social software playing a HUGE role in many organizations – not only inside the company, but outside too. SixSigma – need a champion, sponsor, black belt, green belt, etc. need all different roles to be filled. Finding projects that are applicable to this.

  • Create systems that capture the institutional knowledge and add value to constituents? They go there because it adds value to them and helps them not because they are hammered to do so. PM communities should be viral and self sustaining previous technologies prevented this it is possible today to increase your success rates
