    9. 9. Ephesians 5, Describes Our Walk • Eph 5:1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children…KJV • Eph 5:2…walk in love, as Christ also has loved us…NKJV • Eph 5:8…Walk as children of light…NKJV • Eph 5:15…walk circumspectly, not as fools…NKJV
    10. 10. Eph 5:1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; KJV
    11. 11. Eph 5:1, Be Imitators Of God • Eph 5:1-2 Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. • • • • • 3402 μιμητής mimetes {mim-ay-tace'} Meaning: 1) an imitator Origin: from 3401; TDNT - 4:659,594; n m Usage: AV - follower 7; 7 3401 μιμέομαι mimeomai {mim-eh'-om-ahee}
    12. 12. Be Imitators • 1 Co 4:16 Therefore I urge you to imitate me. • Heb 6:12 We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised. • Heb 13:7…Consider the outcome of their [patriarchs] way of life and imitate their faith. • 3 John 11 Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Anyone who does what is good is from God. Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God.
    13. 13. Eph 5:2, Gave Himself Up For Us • Eph 5:2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. • Ro 12:1-2 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God — this is your spiritual act of worship. 2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will.
    14. 14. Eph 5:1-2, Children Of God • Eph 5:1-2…as dearly loved children… • One day, one of my first-grade students, Taylor, asked his grandmother if he was a child of God. "Why, of course you are, Taylor," she replied. He looked puzzled, then responded, "Well I better get home and tell Mom and Dad— • they think I'm theirs!"
    15. 15. Eph 5:3-7 • Eph 5:3-7 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. 5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person — such a man is an idolater — has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient. 7 Therefore do not be partners with them.
    16. 16. Eph 5:3, Not Be Even A Hint • Eph 5:3…these are improper for God's holy people • Mt 15:16-20 "Are you still so dull?" Jesus asked them. 17 "Don't you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18 But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man 'unclean.' 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. 20 These are what make a man 'unclean'; but eating with unwashed hands does not make him 'unclean.'"
    17. 17. Eph 5:4, Obscenity, Foolish Talk Or Coarse Joking • Eph 5:4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. • Gal 5:19-21 The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this [present active] will not inherit the kingdom of God.
    18. 18. Eph 5:5, Won’t Inherit The Kingdom • Eph 5:5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person — such a man is an idolater — has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. • 1 Cor 6:9-11 Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. [washed=aorist middle, sanctified= aorist passive, justified= aorist passive], ἀπολούω mid. wash oneself 1 Cor 6:11
    19. 19. Eph 5:6, God's Wrath Comes • Eph 5:6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes [indicative present] on those who are disobedient. • CSB Eph 5:6…is coming on the disobedient • John 3:36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains [indicative present active] on him." • It doesn’t say “is put on him”.
    20. 20. Eph 5:6, Children Of The Devil • Eph 5:6…on those who are disobedient. • Mt 13:38…the good seed stands for the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one… • John 8:44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire… • Ac 13:10 "You are a child of the devil and an enemy of everything that is right! • 1 John 3:10 This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother.
    21. 21. Eph 5:7, Not Partners • Eph 5:7 Therefore do not be partners with them. • 2 Co 6:14 Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? • Ps 106:28 • They yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor • and ate sacrifices offered to lifeless gods
    22. 22. Ephesians 5:7-14 • Bible Knowledge Commentary says; • “…Therefore verses 7-14 deal with church discipline. Believers are to walk in the light, and in so doing to expose other believers of any works that are unfruitful so that they too may walk in the light and please their Lord.” • 1Co 5:1-2 …there is sexual immorality among you…Shouldn't you rather have been filled with grief and have put out of your fellowship the man who did this?
    23. 23. Eph 5:8-9 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth)
    24. 24. Eph 5:10-14 and find out what pleases the Lord. 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, 14 for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper,
    25. 25. Eph 5:8…You Were Once Darkness • Eph 5:8…you were once darkness… • John 3:19-21 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
    26. 26. Eph 5:13, Exposed By The Light • Eph 5:13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, • Same Grk. “Exposed” as in John 3:20 • [GING] ἐλέγχω ἐλέγχω—1. bring to light, expose, set forth J 3:20; Eph 5:11, 13; Tit 2:15.—2. convict, convince, point out J 8:46; Js 2:9; Tit 1:9, 13; Jd 15.—3. reprove, correct Mt 18:15; Lk 3:19; 1 Ti 5:20; discipline, punish Hb 12:5; Rv 3:19. [pg 62]
    27. 27. Eph 5:15-20, Live As Wise
    28. 28. Eph 5:15-20 • Eph 5:15-20 Be very careful, then, how you live — not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. 19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
    29. 29. Eph 5:16 Every Opportunity • Eph 5:16 making the most of every opportunity • Gal 6:10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. • Ac 14:27 On arriving there, they gathered the church together and reported all that God had done through them and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles. • 1 Co 16:9…a great door for effective work has opened to me…
    30. 30. Eph 5 Has A Lot Of Abused Verses • Eph 5:18..be filled with the Spirit. • Eph5:22…Wives, submit… • Eph 5:23…as Christ is the head of the church
    31. 31. Eph 5:18, Be Filled With The Spirit • Eph 5:18..be filled with the Spirit. • This verb is a imperative present passive • Imperative [command], present [now and continuing], passive [done to you] • …*GING+ πληρόω πληρόω—1. fill, make full Mt 13:48; Lk 3:5; J 12:3; 16:6; Ac 2:2, 28; 5:28; Ro 1:29; Eph 5:18; Phil 4:18;…
    32. 32. Eph 5:18, Be Filled With The Spirit • Eph 5:18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead,… • Contrasting “filled with the spirit” with filled with wine • filled with wine is a choice you make, then the power of the wine takes control of you • When you yield to the imperative to be “filled with the spirit” then the Spirit exercises control in your life
    33. 33. Eph 5:18, Be Filled With The Spirit • Mt 5:6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled… • Lk 1:15…He [John the Baptist] is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from birth. • Ac 9:17…Ananias…said, "Brother Saul, the LordJesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here — has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit."
    34. 34. Eph 5:18, Were Filled vs. Be Filled • • • • • Ac 2:4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit verb indicative aorist passive Not an imperative/command It indicates a condition from a completed act Ac 13:52 And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit. • verb indicative imperfect passive • “Were filled” is what happened, God did it • “Be filled” is what we need to surrender to

    38. 38. Eph 5:21 Submit To One Another • This is the summary command for what follows • Eph 5:21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. NIV • NET ESV NIV Eph 5:21…out of reverence for Christ. • NKJ KJV Eph 5:21…in the fear of God. • NAS CSB NAU Eph 5:21…in the fear of Christ.
    39. 39. Eph 5 Has A Lot Of Abused Verses • Eph 5:22…Wives, submit… • Eph 5:23…as Christ is the head of the church • Eph 5:22-24
    40. 40. Eph 5:18-21, Is The Context Of 22 • The NET Bible Notes say, “…In any case, 5:21 does form a strong link between 5:18–21 and what follows, so the paragraph division which has been placed between 5:21 and 22 should not be viewed as a complete break in the author's thought…” • Husbands, check list verses 18-21 before you read 22 • Eph 5:18-21….be filled with the Spirit. 19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. • Then you’re ready to read vs. 22
    41. 41. Eph 5:22-24, Roles, Not Worth/Ability • Eph 5:22-24 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.
    42. 42. Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, Love Your Wives, Even When It’s Difficult • Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, • Dr. Talbot while speaking at The Church Of The Open Door, after teaching on Ephesians 5:22 “Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord,” was confronted by a very angry woman who said, “Sir, if you were why my husband, I’d poison you.” He replied, • “Woman, if you were why my wife I would drink the poison.”
    43. 43. Eph 5:25-27 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.
    44. 44. Eph 5:25-27, Love Your Wives Sacrificially • Eph 5:25-27…just as Christ gave himself up for her • Wives are never commanded to “give herself up for him” • But the wife is told; CSB Eph 5:33 …the wife is to respect…
    45. 45. Ken Davis, Husband Learns Love Is More Than Words • For the first 15 years of my marriage, I was a terrible husband. Diane held down a full-time job, became my secretary, mothered our daughters, and waited on me hand and foot without ever demanding that I lift a finger to help. I loved my wife very much, but I hadn't yet learned how to show my love. I had a lesson to learn, and God used a vacuum cleaner to teach it. • I learned many things about vacuuming one day. First, I learned that our cat was terrified of vacuum cleaners. That kept me entertained for about an hour. • As I vacuumed in one direction, a stripe would appear. Going the opposite direction would create a stripe of a different shade. Entranced, I striped the whole room. Then I went crossways, creating a checkerboard pattern. I got so carried away that I dusted the furniture and straightened the entire house.
    46. 46. Ken Davis, Husband Learns Love Is More Than Words • I was once again embedded in the easy chair, working on my crossword puzzle, when Diane came home. She struggled through the door with a bag of groceries under each arm, kicked the door shut with one foot, and then took in the house with an expert glance. Her mouth dropped open. Slowly the bags slipped from her grasp and dropped to the floor. "Who did this?" she asked. • "I did," I said. Without warning, she attacked. Diving on me before I could get out of the chair, she smothered me with kisses and hugs, showering gratitude on me for helping her. The kisses grew more passionate. We broke the chair. It was wonderful! • The vacuum cleaner taught me an important lesson that day. Love is expressed with more than just words.
    47. 47. Eph 5:28-33 • Eph 5:28-33 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church— 30 for we are members of his body. 31 "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." 32 This is a profound mystery — but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
