    5. 5. Oldest Image Of The Apostle Paul • A newly uncovered artwork in the catacombs of Rome has some experts believing it's the oldest image of the Christian apostle Paul. • According to published reports in Europe , the fresco dating back to the 4th century was discovered during restoration work at the Catacomb of St. Thekla but was kept secret for 10 days. The catacomb, or Christian burial place, is close to the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls in Rome, which is said to be built on the location where Paul was buried.

    7. 7. Acts 13:1, Antioch Church Celebs • NAU Acts 13:1 Now there were at Antioch, in the church that was there, prophets and teachers: Barnabas, and Simeon who was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. • NKJ KJV NIV NAS NAU ... brought up with ... • CSB ... a close friend of ... • ESV ... a lifelong friend of... • NET Acts 13:1 ...a close friend of Herod the tetrarch from childhood... • YLT ...Niger, and Lucius the Cyrenian, Manaen also -- Herod the tetrarch's foster-brother -- and Saul;
    8. 8. The City Of Antioch In Syria. • NAU Acts 13:1 Now there were at Antioch… • Not the one in the Bay area! • Some have found about 16 Antiochs! • Many were founded by one of Alexander the Great's generals, Nicator named cities after his father Antiochus!
    9. 9. The City Of Antioch In Syria. • This one was called, 'Antioch the Golden – • Queen of the East,' was the third largest city in the Empire after Rome and Alexandria.(ISBE) Pop: 300,000 to 500,000. • Antioch was a cosmopolitan city. • Though not a seaport, its situation was favorable to commercial development. (ISBE) • About five miles distant from the city was the suburb of Daphne, a spot sacred to Apollo and Artemis. This suburb, beautified by groves and fountains, and embellished by the Seleucids and the Romans with temples and baths, was the pleasure resort of the city, and “Daphnic morals” became a by-word. (ISBE)
    10. 10. The City Of Antioch In Syria. • The citizens were a vigorous, turbulent and pushing race, notorious for their commercial aptitude, the licentiousness of their pleasures, and the profanity of their wit. Literature and the arts, however, were not neglected. (ISBE) • The main street was 4 miles long, paved with marble and marble colonnades! The only city at that time with street lights! It was a city full of interests which attracted all classes of people!
    11. 11. Acts 13:2, Fasting • NAU Acts 13:2 While they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.“3 Then, when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away. • Matthew 9:14 …Jesus said to them, "The attendants of the bridegroom cannot mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them, can they? But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. • Some of the most pertinent NT verses on fasting are in Acts 13, 14, before Acts 15, and the introduction of gentiles…
    12. 12. Acts 14:23, Fasting Is Jewish • Acts 14:23 When they had appointed elders for them in every church, having prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed. • Matthew 17:21 "But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”
    13. 13. Acts 13:5, John [Mark] Minister, Helper • NAU Acts 13:5 When they reached Salamis, they began to proclaim the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews; and they also had John as their helper. • Paul in Acts 26:16 …to appoint you a minister and a witness…. • <5257> ὑπηρέτης huperetes • Meaning: an underling, servant • Origin: from 5259 and ἐρέτης eretes (a rower) • Usage: attendant(1), helper(1), minister(1), officer(1), officers(13), servants(3).
    14. 14. Acts 13:8, is translated? • NAU Acts 13:8 But Elymas the magician (for so his name is translated) was opposing them, seeking to turn the proconsul away from the faith. • What languages did Jesus, and the apostles speak, read, and transact business in? Greek, Aramaic, Hebrew, for sure; • NAU John 19:20 Therefore this inscription many of the Jews read, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and in Greek. 21 And so the chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, "Do not write, 'The King of the Jews'; but that He said, 'I am King of the Jews.'" • Ezr. 4:7, 18, Matt. 1:23, Mk. 5:41, 15:22, 34, Jn. 1:38, 41-42, 9:7, Acts 4:36, 9:36, 13:8, 21:37, 40
    15. 15. Acts 13:6, Paphos
    16. 16. ACTS 13:9-11 There fell on him a mist and a darkness The Acts Of The Holy Spirit Saul
    17. 17. Acts 13:9, Saul Now Paul • NAU Acts 13:9 But Saul, who was also known as Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, fixed his gaze on him, • Between Acts 13:7 and Acts 13:42 “Barnabas and Saul” are replaced with “Paul and Barnabas” • Acts 13:7 The proconsul, an intelligent man, sent for Barnabas and Saul… • Acts 13: 42, 46, 50 …Paul and Barnabas… • NAU Acts 15:35 But Paul and Barnabas stayed in Antioch, teaching and preaching with many others also, the word of the Lord.
    18. 18. Acts 13:13 Wiersbe's Expository Outlines • “Note that it is no longer "Barnabas and Saul" (v. 2) but "Paul and his company." We are not sure why Mark left the party, but Paul considered his act desertion (see 15:38). Was it because Paul had become prominent and Mark's cousin Barnabas was no longer leader? Was it because of the dangerous situations that lay ahead? Was the youth homesick? Whatever the reasons, his deed later caused the two missionaries to part company, although Paul later did forgive and receive Mark (2 Tim 4:11). How wonderful it is that God gives us another chance! More than one servant of God has failed in his early ministry, only to be successful later.”
    19. 19. Acts 13:15, Reading Scripture • Acts 13:15 After the reading of the Law and the Prophets the synagogue officials sent to them, saying, "Brethren, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say it.“ • Nehemiah 8:8 They read from the book, from the law of God, translating to give the sense so that they understood the reading. • Jeremiah 36:8 …Jeremiah the prophet commanded him, reading from the book the words of the LORD in the LORD'S house. • 1 Timothy 4:13 Until I come, give attention to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation and teaching.
    20. 20. Acts 13:15 Reading?
    21. 21. Acts 13:16, Fear God • NAU Acts 13:16 Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand said, "Men of Israel, and you who fear God, listen: • Job 1:9 Then Satan answered the LORD, "Does Job fear God for nothing? • Ecclesiastes 8:13 But it will not be well for the evil man and he will not lengthen his days like a shadow, because he does not fear God. • The remarkable thing about fearing God is that when you fear God you fear nothing else, whereas if you do not fear God you fear everything else. Oswald Chambers
    22. 22. Matthew 10:28, Fear God! • Matthew 10:28 "Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. • Jeremiah 5:21 'Now hear this, O foolish and senseless people, Who have eyes but do not see; Who have ears but do not hear. 22 'Do you not fear Me?' declares the LORD. 'Do you not tremble in My presence? For I have placed the sand as a boundary for the sea… • Proverbs 15:33 The fear of the LORD is the instruction for wisdom… • Psalm 111:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom… • To fear and not be afraid- that is the paradox of faith. A. W. Tozer
    23. 23. A. W. Tozer
    24. 24. Acts 13:16, How Do You Witness To Jews? • NIV Acts 13:16… Men of Israel and you Gentiles who worship God… • Acts 13:16-43, an O.T. Bible tour • Acts 2:22-36 • Acts 3:12-26 • Acts 7:2-53 • Acts 28:23-28 • Isa 7:14, 9:6, 53, Ps 2, Ps 22, Ps 110, Gen 50
    25. 25. Acts 13:20 1 Samuel 3, God Spoke To Him • NAU Acts 13:20 …judges until Samuel the prophet. • 1 Samuel 3:10 Then the LORD came and stood and called as at other times, "Samuel! Samuel!" And Samuel said, "Speak, for Your servant is listening." • Deborah Hough tells, “My 3-year-old son, Ian, enjoys the Bible story about Samuel hearing God's voice at night. One evening after reading the story to Ian, I asked him if God had ever spoken to him. To my surprise, he answered, "Yes.“ "What did God say to you?" I asked. Ian thought and then said in his deepest voice, "Ian! Go to bed!" • That explained why Ian settles down more quickly when I'm outside his room and tell him to go to bed.”
    26. 26. Acts 13:27, Read The Scriptures • NAU Acts 13:27 "For those who live in Jerusalem, and their rulers, recognizing neither Him nor the utterances of the prophets which are read every Sabbath, fulfilled these by condemning Him. • 1 Thessalonians 5:27 I adjure you by the Lord to have this letter read to all the brethren. • George Whitefield said, “God has condescended to become an author, and yet people will not read his writings. There are very few that ever gave this Book of God, the grand charter of salvation, one fair reading through.”
    27. 27. Acts 13:33, By Raising Up Jesus • Acts 13:33 he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus. As it is written in the second Psalm: "'You are my Son; today I have become your Father. • Does the “raising up Jesus” refer to the; • Nativity • Resurrection or • Exaltation
    28. 28. Bible Knowledge Commentary • “Do the words by raising up Jesus (v. 33) refer to His resurrection or to His exaltation? It probably refers to the latter for several reasons: (1) When the Resurrection is mentioned in the next verse it is explained as being from the dead. (2) The same verb "raise up" (anistemi) is used in the sense of elevation in 3:22,26; 7:37 ("send," NIV). (3) A synonym (egeiro) is used in 13:22 to refer to David's promotion to kingship. (4) The primary reason for taking it to refer to Jesus' exaltation is the meaning of Ps 2:7. This Old Testament passage, quoted by Paul (Acts 13:33), described the anointing of the King, which will find its ultimate fulfillment in the Millennium. • Paul confirmed the fact of Jesus" resurrection from the dead by quoting from Isa 55:3 and Ps 16:10 (Acts 13:34-35). Earlier Peter had argued similarly from Ps 16:10 (see comments on Acts 2:25-32).”
    29. 29. Acts 13:36, Memory Verse • Acts 13:36 "For when David had served God's purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his fathers and his body decayed. • An individual believer (personal) • God's purpose • In his time and people • Death ends his earthly ministry
    30. 30. Acts 13:36, Purpose Of God • No individual has any right to come into the world and go out of it without leaving behind him distinct and legitimate reasons for having passed through it. George Washington Carver • 1 Thessalonians 4:7 For God has not called us for the purpose of impurity, but in sanctification. • Acts 13:36 "For David…served the purpose of God … • Good goal, motto, and good memory verse!
    31. 31. Acts 13:39, Justified • Acts 13:39 Through him everyone who believes is justified from everything you could not be justified from by the law of Moses. • Justified is a legal status, To demonstrate or prove to be just, right, or valid; • 1344 δικαιόω dikaioo {dik-ah-yo'-o} • Meaning: 1) to render righteous or such he ought to be 2) to show, exhibit, evince, one to be righteous, such as he is and wishes himself to be considered 3) to declare, pronounce, one to be just, righteous, or such as he ought to be…
    32. 32. Acts 13:14, Pisidian Antioch To Iconium, Acts 13:51 • Iconium (modern Konya) is located 150 mi. [250 km.] south of Ankara and about 100 mi. [165 km.] east of Pisidian Antioch — via the road system
    33. 33. Iconium/ Konya • View looking south over the modern city of Konya (population about 900,000). The green trees on the left horizon mark the rise where the heart of the ancient city of Iconium was located. The site has not been excavated. • Paul and Barnabas ministered in Iconium for about three months before fleeing for their lives.
    34. 34. Acts 13:41, Prophetic Warning • NAS Acts 13:41 'Behold, you scoffers, and marvel, and perish; For I am accomplishing a work in your days, A work which you will never believe, though someone should describe it to you.'" • Habakkuk predicted a miraculous sign or work of God, as judgment. • God repeatedly judges 2 sins in the Scriptures; child sacrifice and approval of homosexuality. Yet the only “moral” push that our government makes is to protect abortion and promote homosexuality.
    35. 35. Acts 13:41, Prophetic Warning • NAU Habakkuk 1:4 Therefore, the law is ignored And justice is never upheld. For the wicked surround the righteous; Therefore, justice comes out perverted. 5 "Look among the nations! Observe! Be astonished! Wonder! Because I am doing something in your days-- You would not believe if you were told. 6 "For behold, I am raising up the Chaldeans, That fierce and impetuous people Who march throughout the earth To seize dwelling places which are not theirs. 7 "They are dreaded and feared. Their justice and authority originate with themselves.
    36. 36. Habakkuk Explains Why • Habakkuk 1:12 Are You not from everlasting, O LORD, my God, my Holy One? We will not die. You, O LORD, have appointed them to judge; And You, O Rock, have established them to correct. 13 Your eyes are too pure to approve evil, And You can not look on wickedness with favor. Why do You look with favor On those who deal treacherously? Why are You silent when the wicked swallow up Those more righteous than they? • We should never assume we are somehow entitled to the blessings that God has poured out on us in the past, either personally or nationally.
    37. 37. Habakkuk 1:5, Acts 13:40-41 Never Presume Blessings • When the prophet Habakkuk questioned God (620 BC), about God allowing the moral decay in Israel. God's answered with Habakkuk 1. God said Babylon would conquer Israel. Israel had "assumed" God would bless them even in their disobedience. Paul, in 45 AD, used the 70 year Babylonian captivity, (586 BC), as a warning of the judgment coming in 70 AD. • We should not allow complacency in our lives, or country. “Therefore take heed, so that the thing spoken of in the Prophets may not come upon you:…”
    38. 38. Acts 13:41, 2 Peter 3:3, Scoffers • NAS Acts 13:41 'Behold, you scoffers, and marvel, and perish… • 2 Peter 3:3 Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts, • It is easy to say we believe in God as long as we remain in the little world we choose to live in; but get out into the great world of facts, the noisy world where people are absolutely indifferent to you, where your message is nothing more than a crazy tale belonging to a bygone age, can you believe God there? Oswald Chambers
    39. 39. NAU Revelation 6:16 …hide us from the presence of Him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb; 17 because the great day of Their wrath has come! And who is able to stand?"
    40. 40. Acts 13:44, The Whole City Assembled • Acts 13:44 The next Sabbath nearly the whole city assembled to hear the word of the Lord. • I wish we could get “the whole city assembled to hear the word of the Lord” in Boonville!
    41. 41. Acts 13:44
    42. 42. Acts 13:51 Iconium Cavemen? The gospel of Jesus Christ!
    43. 43. Acts 13:51, What Is The Most Precious Thing You Have? • The gospel of Jesus Christ! • NAU Acts 13:51 But they shook off the dust of their feet in protest against them and went to Iconium. • Matthew 7:6 "Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before swine,… • Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation… • 1 Timothy 1:11…the glorious gospel of the blessed God • Mark 8:36 "For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?
    44. 44. KJV = King James Version • A ten-year old, under the tutelage of her grandmother, was becoming quite knowledgeable about the Bible. Then, one day, she floored her grandmother by asking, "Which Virgin was the mother of Jesus? • The virgin Mary or the King James Virgin ?"
