  2. 2. Printmaking <ul><li>A process in which an artist repeatedly transfers an original image from one prepared surface to another </li></ul>
  3. 3. Relief Print <ul><li>Printmaking where the image is printed from the raised areas of the printmaking block usually created by cutting away areas of the block </li></ul>
  4. 4. Monoprint <ul><li>A print pulled from an etching, woodblock or collagraph plate that has been altered, making it unique. </li></ul>
  5. 5. Monotype <ul><li>A print pulled in an edition of one from a painted plate that has no permanent markings on it, usually plexiglass, glass or metal. </li></ul>
  6. 6. Collagraph <ul><li>A print made from a plate composed of other materials – papers, fabric, lace, gesso, etc. that is often glued to a support surface. </li></ul>
  7. 7. Brayer <ul><li>A hard rubber roller with a handle used to apply ink to a surface </li></ul>
  8. 8. Printers Ink <ul><li>Pigment combined with a binder providing a more “sticky” medium </li></ul>
  9. 9. Inking Well <ul><li>Surface where ink is applied or rolled out before applying it to the printing block </li></ul>
  10. 10. Inking the Plate <ul><li>The process of applying the ink in preparation of pulling a print </li></ul>
  11. 11. Pulling a Print <ul><li>The process of applying ink to a carved block design, pressing it onto paper and lifting the paper off the inked block </li></ul>
  12. 12. Burnisher <ul><li>Any device used to push the paper against the inked block surface in order to pick up ink and make a print </li></ul>
  13. 13. Baren <ul><li>A tool used for applying pressure to the back of the printmaking paper to enhance the quality of the pulled print </li></ul>
  14. 14. Printmaking Press <ul><li>A piece of equipment that provides slow, constant pressure to a plate to help in the transfer of the image to the printed surface. </li></ul>
  15. 15. Proof <ul><li>A trial print pulled to test the technical aspects of an image </li></ul>
  16. 16. Artist’s Proof <ul><li>One of a small group of prints set aside from an edition for the artist’s use. </li></ul>
  17. 17. Edition <ul><li>Set of identical prints, numbered and signed by the artist </li></ul>
