  • MARCH 11 2011 W E E K LY U P D A T E GRADE 5A @ CDNISThe Language of Geometry and Learning about the past through imagesDear Parents, I would like to thank you for returning the portfolios today with your ownreflections on your child’s learning. I hope discussing the portfolio with your childwas a worthwhile and authentic way to set learning goals and celebrate success. This week we spent a considerable amount of time constructing ourunderstandings of geometrical language. We’ll continue our explorations intogeometry next week and eventually will connect and extend understandings throughthe art of Wassily Kandinsky. We’ve started our investigation into the language features and organizationalstructures of narrative texts. We’ll continue this next week and directly relate ourunderstandings to historical fiction. Over time, students will use their own historicalresearch to create their own pieces of historical fiction. If you look at the earlier post, you will find a Youtube link to a very interestingvideo of Hong Kong in 1938. The students were quite fascinated by it and madesome excellent connections. In addition, there are two links in this blog (below) toarticles in the South China Morning Post about the cemetery in Happy Valley and themyriad of stories about it and its inhabitants. It was great to see the students findsome of these stories on their own following our field trip there. We will the HongKong Museum of History on Wednesday to continue our inquiries into history.Upcoming Events:March 16 - Field trip to history museumMarch 22 - Alan Dick Memorial WalkWeek of March 28: Festival of the ArtsKind Regards,DJ MacPhersondonaldmacpherson@cdnis.edu.hk &http://sites.cdnis.edu.hk/teachers/donaldmacpherson//
